#1 · Jun 3, 2015 Today's patient is my 2007 E92 with sport seats. She is presenting with symptoms of the airbag off light and error message on the iDrive display when someone is sitting in the passenger seat. Sometimes the warning goes away after driving a few minutes, sometimes it doesn't. Scans reveal error code 93C3. I checked BMW for recalls on my VIN and they had none, so I replaced the seat sensor with a new one from BMW. The symptoms seemed to go away for about a week then they came back. When we look, the scanner shows the same code and if we look at the live readings, it shows the seat occupancy sensor as being "not initialized". Assuming the new seat occupancy sensor is good, what am I missing here? Bad wiring harness? Does the new one need programming to activate it? Other? Thanks in advance. Sort by Oldest first Oldest first Newest first Most reactions #2 · Jun 4, 2015 So another thought I had: does the car "deactivate" the seat occupancy sensor in a similar manner to how the FRM disables a light that has been out for a long time? #3 · Jun 4, 2015 Your seat mat sensor is cracked. Common problem on this car. Some models are covered under a recall. #4 · Jun 4, 2015 What are the odds that the brand new replacement is also? That's the problem. 0 Reply #5 · Jun 4, 2015 The resistive wires in the mat cracked due to excess, localized pressure. Kneeling on the seat often causing this failure. It's pretty slim that a replacement will be defective right off the bat. I haven't heard of anyone having the issue come back right away. It was always a few years down the line. #6 · Jun 4, 2015 That's what concerns me, I replaced the mat and within a week or two the symptoms returned. 0 Reply #7 · Jun 4, 2015 Well BMW has a 2 year warranty on parts but I'm sure it was a pain to install it. #8 · Jun 4, 2015 You got that right. That's why I'm trying to rule out any coding/registration possibilities before I go doing that again. 0 Reply #9 · Jun 10, 2015 Funny continuation to my saga... So after breaking down I took the car to BMW, who informed me that the original pad was still in the seat. I was able to confirm this myself looking at the module production date on the pad. My first thought was that the upholstery shop that did the work ran off with my new pad and did nothing at all. Of course talking to him, he swore up and down he did the job. The tone of his voice led me to believe he was just as bewildered by this as I was. Then it occurred to me, could he have installed it on the driver's side instead of the passenger side? Yup! The one question I have is this: Would there be any reason why I can't have the shop swap the new/good pad that is under the driver's seat over to the passenger seat and have him stick the old/defective pad on the driver's seat? Looking at the parts diagrams on realoem, there doesn't seem to be any sensor on the driver's side. Can anyone confirm? Thanks. #11 · Jun 11, 2015 I don't know HOW he installed it on the driver's side. There is no seat mat sensor from the factory on the driver's side for obvious reasons. Where did he expect to plug this sensor into? Is it even connected to anything? Assuming the mat was not damaged, I don't see why you could not swap it. 0 Reply #10 · Jun 11, 2015 The OC3 seat mat sensor can be coded out. If coding it out gets rid of the error, you know the mat sensor is your culprit. This is an older thread, you may not receive a response, and could be reviving an old thread.
