[report] [news]Monday 3rd February 2014quotequote all Currently have a LCI 535d m sport touringBrilliant car, but would like a 7 seater for the odd occasions on short trips with additional passengers such as grandparents, friends etc. two younger kids, almost 5 and 2 in ageTo be honest 90% of the time its driven by my wife so a 3.0d would do although would prefer 3.0sd/ 35d model as its a cracking engine and with extra weight of x5 might be needed?Anyone made this change, anything to bare in mind?Shame the early 2007 are higher tax band which I'll avoidWith a limited budget as in not much in terms of cost to change ie a few £ks, I don't mind the se model I thinkMust have are what I currently have to match in spec, heated seats, pro nav with Bluetooth, xenons, electric heated memory seats as I like how the steering wheel goes up when turning car off to make getting out easier

[report] [news]Monday 3rd February 2014quotequote all I went from a 335d coupe to an x5, felt it was far too big and moved to a 6GC. You just can't do things in a x5 you can do in a 5/6 like overtake

[report] [news]Monday 3rd February 2014quotequote all 6GC is a 6 Gran Coupe - effectively a 5 series saloon but a little bigger with pretty much the same engine as in the 535d (the 300+ bhp diesel). If you want more seats then the 6 is worse, really only a 4 seater, it was more meant to illustrate the fact that the saloons go and handle much much better than the X range, however good people will tell you the X5 is. Fuel economoy will also plummet - I average(d) high 30s in the 335d and the 6gc and over 40 on a run. The X5 is mid 20s and maybe early 30s on a run. I had a fairly recent x5 40d msport with the 8 speed auto box - and while its not slow, the confidence to pull out and overtake just isn't the same (hardly surprising I guess given the size and weight). Also in corners you felt the weight. Each to their own but its the shortest I've ever owned a car at 18 months. Pick an older X5 and both the performance and fuel economy will just get worse. If you need the space then I can see the attraction but the boot wasn't actually that big. If you want 7 seats, then I guess you have no choice but I don't believe the rear two are anything but small and compromised (although fine for ages you're talking about) and the boot gets really small with them folded up. Plenty of others will tell you the X5 is great and to a degree it is, but assuming you like the go in the 535d then I'd think carefully.

[report] [news]Monday 3rd February 2014quotequote all Got to say having the 535d makes overtaking easier But on paper the 3.0d x5 is no slouch wants it's going

[report] [news]Monday 3rd February 2014quotequote all Hi mate,I've just chucked the 550i in for an E70 X5. Had the 535d before the 550i if you remember from BMWLand?I've struggled to bond with the X5 despite it being my second (had one before the 535d). Although I loved it last time, I think coming from silky smooth 550i to what (to me anyway) sounds like a tractor has made things harder. That, together with hard suspension (running 20's on sports suspension) against the non RFT and Dynamic Drive of the 550i.BUT, I'm gradually coming to terms with it. It's more of an adjustment of driving style than anything. In the 550i I could overtake pretty much anything, but I'm having to be more selective with the X5 and adjust my driving style accordingly. In some ways, that's a good thing. I'm also lucky enough to be driving the Xdrive40d so it's no slouch but twinned with the 8-speed ZF auto box of the LCI, it's much nicer just to sit and waft using the torque and plentiful supply of gears available. In short, I've begun to bond with it and it really is a remarkably capable car for what it is - a heavy, tall house on wheels. It goes around corners with aplomb and feels like a high saloon car (wraps around you) but is a world away from my 550i and that's perhaps been the only problem - it's not the cars fault, it's the fact I've been spoilt.I dare say that in a few months, with the 550i a old memory, it'll be brilliant. In the meantime, I'm putting up with it and the wife absolutely loves it! And I must admit its great for the one year old being able to see everything out of the window and the boot is great for swallowing all her junk without worrying about packing it properly.Take one for a testdrive and beware of the early ones which were indeed high VED. After mid-2008 I think they started to fall under the major threshold and become reasonable for their performance.I averaged 26.4mpg in the pre LCI I had which was a 3.0d over about 18months and 22k miles. With the current one, I've only done a lot of urban stuff in it over 300miles and so far averaging 26mpg. Nothing like the figures and worse than the usual 20% discount to official figures I normally work on but I know it's going to be better overall than the pre LCI even with the extra turbo and additional 79bhp.Re rear seats - my boss bought one with 7 seater from new with same intention and aged kids as yours. Five years on and he's selling the car only having used them twice due to the fact they're tiny and also deplete boot space. For me, the additional boot space you get under the boot without the 7-seater option is far more worthy.Edited by Spuffington on Monday 3rd February 15:25

[report] [news]Monday 3rd February 2014quotequote all Its interesting that you're having to get used to it. I did for a while, loved the driving position and in the winter it felt great. In the summer I lost interest. Changing cars costs money and from a car you know the history of to one that you don't and by the sounds of it not the current model(?). I don't know and its tricky to damn a car without knowing your personal position, but if your budget can stretch to a F series 530d or 535d or even the relatively unloved 5GT you might get something that delivers more (although no extra seats). Changing just for 2 extra seats you may use once in a while doesn't sit comfortably with me (in a down the pub, chewing the fat, kind of way).

[report] [news]Monday 3rd February 2014quotequote all Can you get a 7 seat conversion for the current 535d? - the type with the folding seats in the boot?I remember riding in these in the back of my dad's old 740 volvo between about 4 and 10 years old - folded neatly into the rear floor when not needed?I don't know if this is an option though?

Secondly, my 3.0D was transformed with a Superchips remap; thirdly, my current 40D overtakes really rather nicely and I can't wait to get it remapped. And this from someone used to superbikes and 911s…

[report] [news]Tuesday 11th February 2014quotequote all We had an E60 530d (superchipped) with massive spec & now have an E70 35d with Bluefin. Can't say there's a problem with overtakes, but I would/should have got an 8 speeder rather than the 6 speeder auto. We've used it for fully loaded blast to Italy via the Stelvio & really can't complain at all. Great as a tow car for my race bike too. Drive steady & it'll better 30mpg, but generally does 24-25 on shortish commutes. No reliability issues so far. HTH.

[report] [news]Wednesday 12th February 2014quotequote all I've gone to an X5 3.0d from and E60 525 Msport after the 5 was written off last year. I've also struggled to adapted to the X5 after the 525, especailly with the handling it just doesn't go around corners as well, which is not suprising considering it's bulk. The main reason for choosing a X5 was that my wife will be driving it most of the time and she wanted a higher driving position and the extra height for putting our daughter (18 months) in her seat. The seven seat option will also be handy come later years.I'm in for the long haul, so hopefully now that the minor problems I've had with it which have now been sorted by the dealer my view will change, it's a really a well spec'd one (list was well over £50k when new) although saying that VED is expensive (it's a 2007 model) and so are the 20" wheels but I find the performance comparable with my 525 neither of which have been chipped. My advice would be to take an extended test drive and see how you get on.
