The CEF Scale

The CEF (Common European Framework) is the widely recognised reference scale for languages developed by the Council of Europe for evaluating and comparing language levels. PET uses the scale to track the progress of our course participants.

We have divided each standard level of the CEF scale into three sublevels, to enable us to determine the participants’ progress and development more accurately. According to our version, for example, A1.3 is a more solid level within the A1 band than A1.1.

Upper advanced C2.1, C2.2, C2.3

I can understand with ease virtually everything heard or read. I can also spontaneously, precisely and very fluently communicate in all business and private situations.

C1

Advanced C1.1, C1.2, C1.3

I can communicate very competently on a wide range of business and private topics; take part in negotiations; chair and participate confidently in meetings; prepare and deliver full presentations and write detailed reports.

B2

Upper intermediateB2.1, B2.2, B2.3

I can interact competently with native speakers on business and private topics; take part in business discussions or conference calls; give presentations; understand longer discussions and presentations.

B1

Intermediate B1.1, B1.2, B1.3

I can take part in non-complex meetings; discuss job-specific topics; handle typical situations arising on a business trip; meet and greet customers; give short presentations on work-related topics.

A2

Upper elementaryA2.1, A2.2, A2.3

I can participate in a simple conversation, ask and answer questions; conduct basic telephone calls; understand short emails and formulate short replies.

A1

ElementaryA1.1, A1.2, A1.3

I can understand very simple questions and give simple answers; answer the phone and transfer the caller.

A0
