The CEF Scale

The Council of Europe’s Common European Framework (CEF) is a generally recognised international scale for the comparison and assessment of language skills.

PET uses its own, extended version of the CEF scale. It divides the six standard levels into three further levels (e.g. A1.3 is a higher A1 level than A1.1). In this way, students’ progress can be evaluated more accurately and realistically.

Advanced IIC2.1, C2.2, C2.3

I can understand with ease virtually everything heard or read.  I can also spontaneously, precisely and very fluently communicate in all business and private situations.

C1

Advanced IC1.1, C1.2, C1.3

I can communicate very competently on a wide range of business and private topics; take part in negotiations; chair and participate confidently in meetings; prepare and deliver full presentations and write detailed reports.

B2

Intermediate IIB2.1, B2.2, B2.3

I can interact competently with native speakers on business and private topics; take part in business discussions or conference calls; give presentations; understand longer discussions and presentations.

B1

Intermediate IB2.1, B2.2, B2.3

I can take part in non-complex meetings; discuss job-specific topics; handle typical situations arising on a business trip; meet and greet customers; give short presentations on work-related topics.

A2

Elementary IIA2.1, A2.2, A2.3

I can participate in a simple conversation, ask and answer questions; conduct basic telephone calls; understand short emails and formulate short replies.

A1

Elementary IA1.1, A1.2, A1.3

I can understand very simple questions and give simple answers; answer the phone and transfer the caller.
