Dancing on Ice: Ian ‘H’ Watkins enters the skating rink

ITV series Dancing on Ice is going to be hitting screens this evening (Sunday, January 5). A total of six couples will be taking to the ice tonight before the remaining six will be performing the following weekend as per the format. The six performing pairs are Lisa George, Trisha Goddard, Ben Hanlin, Perri Kiely, Joe Swash and Ian ‘H’ Watkins.

Dancing on Ice 2020 is finally here after the line-up was announced last year and the couples were all partnered up.

Among the celebrities joining the show this year will be Perri Kiely from Diversity, Lisa George from Coronation Street, Caprice and Trisha Goddard, among others.

There will be a total of 12 couples on the show with former Blue Peter star Radzi Chinyanganya replacing Michael Barrymore who had to pull out due to injury at the last-minute.

This Morning duo Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield will be on hand to present once more on the series.

The show is going to see a revamped judging panel with John Barrowman replacing Jason Gardiner.

He will be joining veterans Jayne Torvill, Christopher Dean and Diversity alumni Ashley Banjo.

This year the show will see its first same-sex couple in the form of Ian “H” Watkins from Steps and Matt Evers skating together, making it the first British reality series of its kind to do.

BBC rival Strictly Come Dancing has always discussed having a same-sex couple every year but it’s never materialised.

The closest the show came was last year when professionals Johannes Radebe and Graziano Di Prima performed a routine together.

ITV now appears to have pipped Strictly to the post after confirming H would be partnered up with Matt Evers.

The pair appeared on the Christmas special a couple of weeks ago when Dancing on Ice launched and saw the couples giving a special performance.

Speaking at a VT from the launch programme, H said he’s wanted to be partnered with a man from the start.

He explained in the video: "Because I am a gay guy, it was always in my mind that I wanted a same-sex partner."

While Matt said: "This journey is so so personal and important to both of us."

Ian added: "It's going to mean a lot to a lot of people in this country and around the world."

However, tonight marks the first show when the stars will be competing for their place in the contest with the first elimination occurring next week.

Speaking about his strengths and weaknesses, H said: “I can definitely say my strength is that I’m all or nothing.

“I’m 110 percent committed. I will be at the rink before my partner.

“In terms of weaknesses, I guess I have a tendency to overdo things, and I get in my head and second guess. I self doubt.”

They both recently confessed being in a male same-sex couple had its challenges due to anatomy.

Matt told The Sun: “We’re in full-on practice mode. There’s a practical difference, though.

“Parts of his anatomy get in the way in certain moves, on some of the lifts.

“We’re having to alter the lifts because it’s never been done before.”

Dancing on Ice airs on ITV tonight at 6pm
