Dusty Cat D Hi all I would be really grateful for some expert input on an ABS issue. Back in February 3 warning lights came on together - the parking brake, ABS and ESP. The start/stop and auto hold feature also packed up. I had the codes scanned and the fault code (I don't have any of the codes, sorry!) indicated a nearside rear ABS sensor. I had put off the repair as I have had a whole load of other expenses recently but of course it failed the MOT which made it a priority to get done. My local garage changed the sensor but are now saying there is still a fault and it is most likely the ABS control module. To replace this will cost a nice £1,800 which I don't really have lying around! Also, the module will take 7-14 days to arrive which will leave me without a car for 2 weeks or so. My only glimmer of hope it that there may be a problem with the wiring between the new ABS sensor and the control module. They are investigating this during the week but need to remove a lot of stuff from the car (wheel arch liners, rear seats etc.) How likely is it to be a wiring fault? Is this a common failure on the B7? Also, is it likely to be successful if I try to source a reconditioned unit, and can anyone recommend a reputable supplier? Apart from stat/stop everything seems to be working OK. Auto hold doesn't work with the auto hold button but when I needs to do a hill start I simply engage the hand brake and it automatically disengages when I pull away. I'm not sure if the ABS and ESP are working or not, it's a 1.6 TDi so I don't get many chances to test it out! I have lost faith in VW now - what would people do in my position? Do the repair? It may happen again. I have also read about EGR valves going at a similar cost. Should I just get shot of it? I do like the car and the economy is great which is why I bought the car really. It has also just been serviced and had 2 new front tyres. Just for background info - the same garage replaced the rear discs and pads in December. Thanks in advance - as you can imagine this is a pretty major hit for me and I need to manage it the best possible and most cost effective way. Cheers. I too changed some of the and sensors before locating a slight break in the wiring loom, repaired that and all good. As the cables in car wiring looms is small gauge cable they're susceptible to breakage, more so as the vehicle ages and corrosion/wear increases. So it may be something of nothing, my experience is that the electronic components are fairly robust unless located in the wrong place as Crasher has shown in some of his examples. #3 · Jul 9, 2016 ABS ECU faliure is not a common issue on your car, we would need some proper code info to give you accurate help. #4 · Jul 10, 2016 OK thanks, I will try to get the codes tomorrow. I am planning to take it to my local VW dealership to get a full diagnosis done in the hope they may consider a factory goodwill replacement if it is the module. If it is a faulty wire then all the better! Cheers DC 0 Reply #5 · Jul 11, 2016 There is no "Campaign" (AKA recall) relating to the ABS showing on my system but there is a "Technical Product Information" notice, number 2032159/3, about wheel speed sensor problems caused by dirt on the sensor or encoder ring so it may just be as simple as a sensor needs cleaning. For goodwill to be offered on a near six year old car, it must have been purchased and serviced exclusively with the VW network. #6 · Jul 11, 2016 (Edited) Ok thanks. I'm taking it to Martins VW Basingstoke today to get a diagnosis. I will post fault code if they let me have them. All services apart from the one before the fault appeared were at VW dealerships. My luck! #7 · Jul 12, 2016 All fixed! After a full diagnostic check it was found to be the same sensor at fault. My local garage fitted a Pagid sensor and it must have been faulty or sending duff info to the ABS module. A VW sensor has been fitted and the fault cleared. I can now go back to my local garage for a retest & MOT certificate. Maybe they'll even refund me for the duff sensor? Hope this helps someone out in the future. I was also really impressed with the service at the dealership. I can't express how relieved I am to have this sorted! All the best! 👍😁 #8 · Apr 23, 2018 Hi again. The lights are back on! I'm guessing it is just a dirty or faulty ABS sensor. Is it worth checking each sensor to see if dirt is the issue? If a replacement is required are they wheel specific and what make is best to go for? Thanks in advance. DC #9 · Apr 23, 2018 It depends what this garage uses to scan you motor. With VAG-COM\VCDS you can show the signal from all ABS sensors (as you drive the car around) with VC-Scope, a graph and compare. #10 · Apr 23, 2018 Thanks! I'm not sure what they use - I'm going to a VW specialist instead to get the fault code, then I hope to repair or replace it myself. I just need to know which one it is. Are they VW parts or would Bosch rtc. be OK? #11 · Apr 24, 2018 Where do you live? There might be a member with VAG-COM\VCDS that con do a scan and show the signal all the ABS sensors. We do have VAG-COM/VCDS User Locations but very few members add their details. #12 · Apr 24, 2018 I'm in Basingstoke, Hampshire. 👍 0 Reply #13 · Apr 26, 2018 hi, i had a similar issue - details on this forum here; - http://www.volkswagenforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=29032 replaced sensor and fault coming back - turned out to be wheel bearing. ATB stuart #14 · Apr 26, 2018 When all checks have been done, wiring, VC-Scope etc. As Stuart says the later ABS sensors are in the wheel bearing therefore the wheel bearing has to be replaced.
