Jamer J My problem is, I replaced my wheel hub due to bearing failure. I destroyed the original sensor when removing. I installed a new hub with a new sensor. I have an abs fault now with the wheel speed sensor. I thought that I may have bought the wrong sensor so I replaced it with another new sensor and I still have the same fault. Could my wheel hub have an issue? Does the sensor need calibrated to the wheel hub? The fault resets but come back when my speed reaches about 5 mph while applying the brakes. Thanks for your help Sort by Oldest first Oldest first Newest first Most reactions #2 · Dec 17, 2018 There are a few possible causes I can think of for your issue. One being wiring damage to the harness side when the original was removed. The sensor might be installed too deep. Or debris is present in the mounting hole/ring area. There isn't any calibration required with the sensor. #3 · Dec 17, 2018 You might have some debris in the hole where the sensor picks up its 'pulse'. The end of the sensor that sticks out is larger than the hole it sits in, so if it's in to far then it would have to have been forced. You can check the sensor for resistance with an ohm meter. I'm fairly certain the specs are 1.0KΩ to 1.3KΩ. If the specs on the sensor are within that range the sensor is good, other problems further up the circuit should be checked. Check the condition of the harness itself as 'hu vw' suggests. If the harness has any damage to it, replacing the harness and sensor is one piece so it's relatively straight forward. The sensor is about $30 for a Non Genuine VW part. Aftermarket parts work just fine, I've done a few myself. The hardest thing is getting the old sensor out. If you're up in the rust belt as I was, getting the old sensor out will break most men. I did one few years ago, had to pound a punch into it and pry it out with multiple screw drivers. When re-installing, clean out the hole real well, and use a dab of anti-seize compound on the rear portion of the sensor. Make sure you don't get any on the front portion where the little dots are! The sensor has these little dots all around it, like brail. #4 · Dec 17, 2018 Thanks a lot. I’ll be checking everything you mentioned. #5 · Dec 19, 2018 Make sure to test with hard panic stops. My left rear sensor was slightly out of position-normal stops were ok, but couldn’t stop hard, even though there were no errors. Computer did not read full speed of wheel. ABS not functioning right. #6 · Dec 20, 2018 I would make sure the tone ring (the slotted ring on the axle) that the sensor picks it's reading from if free of bearing grease and any debris. Along with what the others have mentioned. #7 · Jan 23, 2019 Thanks everybody. I really appreciate all the help I receive here. Well, I finally got the parts in and changed out both the wheel hub and wheel speed sensor. The fault reset and has remained clear for a week now. Upon inspection of the old hub and sensor once removed it appears that the sensor housing on the back of the hub wasn’t true, it had a tilt to it. The sensor wasn’t rubbing but it must not have been picking up the tone ring consistently. Thanks again for all the help. Insert Quotes Post Reply
