Found this good summary below of MB's change from kompressor to CGI technology.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
BlueEFFICIENCY is a range of green environmental technologies aimed at reducing carbon emissions and improving fuel consumption across the Mercedes-Benz range. As a part of the BlueEFFICIENCY strategy, Mercedes-Benz has replaced the Kompressor engine with the new CGI engine in the C-Class Saloon and Estate.
The Kompressor surpercharged engine was developed to boost a car's power and acceleration using a forced induction system. New innovations in engine development have produced the Charged Gasoline Injection (CGI) engine. The CGI engine uses homogeneous direct injection with high-precision piezoelectric injectors combined with turbocharged for an increase in output from a small displacement engine. Alternatively, the Kompressor engine used a supercharger which drew its power from the engine, thereby increasing the petrol consumption.
The CGI engine has reduced fuel consumption from 8.1L/100km (C 200 Kompressor) to 7.3L/100km (C 200 CGI). The CGI engine is also cleaner than its predecessor, expelling 171g CO2 p/km (C 200 CGI) compared with 200g CO2 p/km (C 2oo Kompressor). A reduction in engine noise and improved torque output are both benefits of the switch to CGI engines. The new CGI engine demonstrates Mercedes-Benz dedication to reducing the impact of its vehicles on the environment.

yes...
but for like the C180 and possibly the C200 BE, what they do is that they remove sound insulation and thin the windscreen... how good is that im not sure

thanks for the read.
what i can share is.. BlueEfficiency is a marketing gimmick. the gains or difference in FC is so minute, i even have other CGI owners (both e and c class) getting the same FC or worse (probably due to turbo, drive harder).
what i can conclude is, everyone is jumping on the im-green-because-i-drive-a-big-car-but-its-environmentally-friendly bandwagon. in a bid to induce the feeling of customers contributing to conserving the environment, thats all ![]()
but at least now more and more people are feeling socially and environmentally responsible ![]()

oic....dunno if MB is using the 3M thinsulate material for all the BE models. thinner and lightweight doesn't necessarily mean it's worse.

for the Blue Efficiency range...lighter, more fuel-efficient, more eco-friendly at a lower cost to consumers?
Sorry, but I am cynical about it. Something's gotta give.
If you can read between the lines in the marketing literature:
"Weight has been saved with a thinner windscreen, less sound deadening equipment and thinner, lighter alloy wheels shod with low rolling resistance tyres."
Thinner wind screen: less insulation from road and wind noise. less protection from external impact. less heat/UV insulation?
Less sound deadening equipment: more NVH
low rolling resistence tyres: less wet/dry grip
Of cos, I have no doubt about stuff like improved aerodynamics and lighter rims.
**Actually, as I typed the above, it suddenly occurred to me that this Blue Efficiency thing that MB is doing to their lineup is effectively telling us that they think the Japs/Koreans have gotten it right from the beginning ... in producing tin cans with less material and offering better fuel efficiency*
If they are intending to have replace all models with Blue Efficiency....then it is a technological advancement in the same line as the progress of their AT boxes from 4 speed to 5 speed to 7G-tronic to the latest 9 speed implementation that filters down the generation of MB cars starting from their flagship. Otherwise, if it is limited to a model within each class of the MB lineup, it is not going to be mainstream.....

yeah.. with such engines and power at crank, the question is how much "green" can they achieve.. probably an insignificant amount.
if all car manufacturers go green eventually, they will just look for another marketing gimmick to let the customers feel that they are responsible (either socially, environmentally, etc).
i love how those car manufacturers go green and slap on a "green" and environmentally friendly name tag on the car model.. e.g Mercedes Benz's BlueEfficiency.
