The more powerful sequential turbo engines are designated M57 and they're actually not as new as the N57s. Given the 535d uses the sequential turbo setup, I think it's actually running a variant of the M57. It's interesting how there's the same sort of "N55 vs N54" relationship between the two engines: the N57 is technically newer and more advanced, but the M57 seems to be the choice for BMW's more powerful models.
I'm kinda puzzled, I thought the N57 was offered in two variations, the 30d and 40d (x5 as an example) I thought the 40d was a single turbo with twin scroll technology. I looked at the specs listed at BMW.CO.UK and sure enough it lists the 535d as a twin turbo, same with the x5 40d. 30d is listed as a turbo. The funny this the 30d and 40d are rated at the exact same mpg. From my understanding the N57 is more fuel efficient that the M57. So if the 535d is a M57 how could it get the same MPG as the 530d N57? Very strange. Hopefully a knowledgeable Euro member can shed some more light on this. I'm holding out for one of these engines in a X3 for the USA,

I could see a 335d or 535d as my next car. After an M, it would be a dream car. BMW will have to bring a range of diesels to NA in order to meet the 2016 milage legislation.

on my invoice for the 535d it says 'N57 3.0d' they dont mention 'twin turbo' anywhere in the UK or German catalogue (but they do for the 550i) so it's probably a twin scroll. Last edited by highfive; 03-24-2011 at 03:11 AM..

I had an Audi A5 3 litre TDI Quattro before changing for the 2011 535D saloon M Sport. But I can honestly say that the engine so far has been absolutely pefect. Lots of power and Im getting an average 34 mpg. The car just has no fault as far as I can see. Well maybe the compñlicated Rear Seat Entertainment could be easier to use........ But mechanically, I have never driven such a sound and fun car.

Maybe that's why they won't bring the 535d to the states- everyone says they want one, nobody buys it. By the way, did anyone notice that diesel is 15 to 30 cents higher than premium- at least here in NY/NJ.

You do realize loaners are a great way to sell/market a car, right? __________________ Current: 2010 Alpine White 335D LCI l 19" BBS LMs l KW V2 Coilovers l BMW Performance Grilles l MSport Front/Rear l Karbonwerke Trunk l F1 Pinnacle Tint 35% Former: E92 Space Grey 335i Latest pics

In the winter...at least in the Northeast....the price of diesel is 15 cents (or so) higher than premium largely,I've read, because you're competeing with those who have oil heat (many homes in the Northeast have oil heat) for your fuel.As you may or may not know home heating oil and diesel fuel are all but identical. The rest of the year diesel is within a couple of pennies of Premium. __________________ Current : 2018 540d Formerly: 2014 328d Formerly: 2011 MB E350 Bluetec Formerly: 2009 335d

The diesels sold in Europe aren't a direct correlation to the US versions. On the GT series for the rest of the world, for example, they have the 530d and the 535d. The engine in the 530d is closer to the US 335d at about 265hp, while the 535d is (as indicated in the article) the 299hp version. In either case, I agree, I would very much have preferred purchasing a diesel version of my new car (to be picked up in Munich late April) verses the gasoline engined version, but, BMWUSA told me there was a chance it might show in the mid-cycle update due late 2012, and it might not...I just couldn't wait longer, as I'd already put it off over a year.

In 2010 BMW sold 3,800 335d units in the USA vs 4600 335i units. The 335i is available with xdrive the 335d isn't. Not bad numbers considering a market strategy of eco credit and word of mouth. It wasn't until the 2011 Super Bowl commercial that BMW got serious about marketing their diesel technology for the USA. It seems to me that offering the 335d as a loaner is a great way to market the car. What is your point about diesel prices being higher than premium?

N54 twin turbo - engine cover has no wording N55 single turbo - engine cover says "Twin Power Turbo". Confusing? Yewbetcha.

I think for the N55 it may be a single 'twin-scroll' turbo system and the redesigned exhaust manifold which divides into two three cylinder sections to feed the turbo. Could be mistaken though. Supposed to improve the breathing. The N57S which I have on my X6 is the 3.0D powerplant with two differently sized turbos to give 306bhp and mated to the ZF 8sp auto. My Dealer told me the 40d had a single twin-scroll system but when I popped the hood at delivery there were two blowers sitting there waiting to play . Whether they are both twin scroll I have yet to discover. No manual available as the engine won't pass the emission regs and is supposed to be more economical in auto too. All I know is it goes like the wind for a 2-tonne wagon with a top speed approaching 150mph - Yipe!!

The only thing you're mistaken about is the reason for the setup you described, which is correct. The reason to do it is to improve turbo spool time / response.
