[0.00]1975 Porsche 914 2.0L [0.00] N57 Diesel Purchase Thoughts Hi Everyone, Getting ready to pull the trigger on a 2014 X5 xDrive35D with just under 100k on the clock. I was originally looking at an E70 LCI 35D but the price difference between that and early F15 cars is negligible when you consider all of the changes between generations. So, I’ve found a car that has a great set of options and phenomenal service history. I also understand that these cars have a 10 year / 120k extended emissions warranty on many of the emissions components, which adds some peace of mind. I’ve been researching as much as I can about these cars and the N57 diesel engine but there’s not too much data out there yet, which could be a good or bad thing. It doesn’t look like too many folks have taken these cars much past 100k yet. From what I’ve read, the N57 is a huge improvement over the M57 in terms of efficiency and emissions-related reliability. However, I do see the occasional thread throwing out the idea that these engines might suffer from the same timing chain issues as their little brother, the N47. Does anyone have any concrete proof that there is any sort of catastrophic design flaw in the 3.0L N57 diesel engine? Or anything else in this drivetrain for that matter? I am fully prepared for the usual few grand per year in BMW upkeep (this is my fourth bimmer) but I can’t stomach the idea or costs of a $15k engine replacement. Looking forward to your feedback, any guidance is appreciated!

There are many threads here with diesel discussions, I don't think there are any "catastrophic design flaws" in N57. Majority of the issues are related to the emissions and "green" part of the N57 diesel such as EGR cooler leaking, EGR valve gets stuck, DEF system not happy etc. Just yesterday someone posted a new recall about HPFP but looks like pretty small amount of cars is affected. Overall in my opinion diesel is reliable enough to keep for a long time. Cant nearly Make as much power m57 is true twin turbo whereas n57 is single VGT . M57 may have a few issues that you have to resolve early on but after that they are sturdy as a rock. N57 makes more efficiency because it has an 8 speed compared to m57 6 speed. Emissions wise they will both crap out neck and neck so don't rely on it to be bulletproof for emissions. They all have to be deleted regardless. N57 will need timing chains at around 150k miles ish.

The only major thing was the recent EGR replacement which is a know issue, and from what I've been told, an issue with any diesel. I'd say that stock it lacks some power from 50-80mph, but the Racechip helped with this in my trials. 100,000 miles is nothing for a diesel either, but I'd look hard at teh BMW warranty as you stated. Carbon build up is the major issue I have been watching - what caused the EGR recall and failure on mine. Google and you'll find lots, ask if it's been addressed on your X5, and then watch for it IMO. Was not a major issue once BMW admitted it was a failure (I did my own code reading for an ODB2 scanner (P0401 code) which was WAY easy once I tried it. i am not a mechanic by any means).

Those engines can last 400-500k miles w/o an issue .... most likely the car will give you more headache. enjoy it! I own a 200k diesel and just love it.

Which diesel do you drive that has not needed more than oil changes and good quality fuel in 200k miles?.

People's cp4 pump blows up before 100k miles. And the DPF/ SCR/ EGR/ DEF system will crap out around those miles too. A fully deleted diesel with good oil change service intervals (5-10k) and regular preventative maintenance will help. But 400-500k will not come easily

I cannot complain, it has been great to me. At Around 80-85k I had the stealership do all the fluids beyond the engine, except the transmission fluid & Filter (I did those myself). I just hit 100k on mine and did a full tune up on it.. (cleaned glow plugs ports and replaced them, replaced heating module, cleaned intake manifold, cleaned EGR Valve and lubed with 105, cleaned EGR Cooler, cleaned EGR Pipe, cleaned Throttle body, cleaned Intake Ports, cleaned all sensors in those areas, replaced all seals & reset adaptations). I have zero problems with my DPF nor my CP4. And, I do not let my tank go below 50%. BTW, there's a CP4 recall: (N57 35d (and others) Diesel HPFP Recall https://f15.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1847232 I also replenish the DEF with Platinum Everytime I do an oil change. Engine is running like new again. I do give it plenty of highway miles and I change my engine oil every 5k regardless of what BMW says (use FCP Euro). The only problem I had was a dirty injector (#4) but it was because I am sure the diesel I filled up with had poor quality. I changed my fill ups to Exxon and after four fill-ups, the issue was fixed. If you take care of your engine, it'll take care of you. I would make sure you get familiar with performing services (search the Forums & You Tube) so you can save money using FCP.

There's a TSB on it for new owners (bought mine PO, so I'm out of luck) and mine doesn't seem to be under the HPFP recall either. I will say the FIs are very easy to reach and I did clean the 4 I haven't replaced yet. FIs are $300+ each (parts from FCP). But they are easy to get to as a DIY and there are good videos on You Tube for these issues.

crystalworks Captain crystalworks's Avatar 540Rep 654Posts Drives: Many BMW's Join Date: Jul 2017 Location: SA, TX iTrader: (0) I had the dealership do 2 injectors to the tune of $850 shortly after we purchased ours back in Dec. 2020 w/ ~82k miles on it. Hoping the MY 2015 X5 gets added to the injector extended warranty so I can get reimbursed. Other than that... it's been good needing a battery (it was original) and some other minor cosmetic repairs. Maintenance includes trans fluid, Xfer case fluid & diff fluids coming soon, air filters (engine and cabin), and that's about it. All BMWs are going to need maintenance. Probably more when compared to other brands. I budget $2000/yr per BMW we own for repairs. Some years we spend $500 and some we spend $5000 between 6 Bimmers. Part of driving a vehicle that was designed with so much tech and trying to extract as much as possible out of a given displacement. Is what it is. Nothing drives as well as a well-maintained (or new) BMW.

You got off cheap on the 2 injectors - my 2 were $2600 - leading me to watch a LOT of YouTube videos to avoid going back to the dealer for the other 4. Parts online look to be about $300 and change each, but I've physically disassembled and cleaned the remaining injectors, so I now know I can swap the 4 I need to in a couple of hours without issue. I am also looking at replacing the battery - that's $550 and has to be programmed to the car's computer, so I can't do that at home. So I'll pony up and pay the dealer to do that one. I am finding that planning to set aside a couple thousand per year (there will be peaks and valleys starting around 70k mi) is probably a best approach to planning for maintenance needs. It is a fun vehicle to drive, for certain.

No need to pay dealer for the battery, you can get it for $200-250 and replace it using Carly, ISTA,Foxwell or other tool.

^What he said. I did my battery (only have the single 105AH AGM) myself. Cost was ~$185. I have a Foxwell here on hand. It's an absolute must if you own a modern BMW. The F15 requires the NT530 w/ BMW software. Costs ~$160. Pays for itself the first time you use it. Quote:

Holy cow! $2600! They billed me incorrectly actually. It was supposed to be ~$1300 for 2 injectors but they quoted me wrong and honored it on vehicle pickup.
