Rear door speaker grill removal in W124 wagon??? The original factory rear door speakers (located in armrest) in my 87 300TDT are getting crackly and in need of replacement. I've been told the speaker grills are very fragile and removal is tricky, and want to be sure not to break them while trying to remove them. What is the proper method for removal of these speaker grills??? J.G. Reply With Quote

Wait you have an 87 300TD and your door car speaker grills are still intact? This is amazing all in it's own! Let me see if I can find my speaker grills (my door cards are shot, speaker grills and speaker mounts are busted). These are the perfect drop in replacement's for you car, they are Rainbow products. I just ordered these from this company, beautiful packaging but I haven't installed them yet. I only bought the front set because I am exploring options on what I should do on the back door cards since they are shot and I do not have replacement door cards at the moment. Front & Rear W124 speakers are 120mm unfortunately, and if you go to Crutchfield you get this message. Thanks for the response!...that's great news...after I figure out how to get the grills off, I was going to have to find appropriate replacement speakers, and I didn't want to "make" something fit vs. having perfect drop-ins. The Rainbow units look to be just what the Dr. ordered! You are right...other than my car, I have seen precious few 124 wagons with intact rear speaker grills. Other than a little scuffing of the paint, they are perfect and untouched. Since mine are so nice, I don't want to screw them up trying to get them off without knowing the proper technique. If you can post pictures of the back-side of the grills with the mounting tabs, I can probably figure out the right procedure. Also- any personal experience/tips you have would be greatly appreciated! J.G. Reply With Quote

If I remember correctly there is a phillips screw on the bottom and two plastic pins on the top. Unscrew the screw, pull bottom out very slightly and jiggle it up. Reply With Quote

Drop in is the way to go. My car is in the shop, I took a quick hop in the attick to see if I had the older grill in there but did not see it; I can take a video when I get the car back from the indie and shoot you a link. Until then Limited Edition is more knowledgeable than I. Reply With Quote

YOU'RE RIGHT!!! I hadn't gotten down on my knees (with my reading glasses) to look all the way under the armrest. There IS one very small black philips head screw tucked under there! The removal procedure you outline sounds very similar to the process for removing the dash grills in my 450SL. I'll give it a shot and let you know how it goes. BTW- I ordered the Rainbow speakers!..."Holiday Sale" for $319 for the complete set of two fronts and two rears. A little pricey, but they look like good quality German manufactured units. The fact that they will drop right in without modifications makes it worth the price. Pretty soon that radio will sound like it hasn't for years! Many thanks for the help. J.G Reply With Quote

That's great news, wait until you see how they packaged the speakers; I just got the front set and it came in what looked more like a briefcase than speaker packaging. I agree they are pricey but I am sure they are well worth it. By the way, if you have a moment I'd love for you to shoot me an e-mail via iamfrankstallone[at]gmail.com and let me know how much of a difference the Stage 2 chip made on your 1999 E300TD for overall performance.
