wolf_walker W This car has the fancy radio, woofers in doors, three way in rear deck. Is it my imagination or does one have to pull the rear deck out to remove the retaining washers clip thingys from the post on the rear grills that go into the rear deck in order to remove those grills without breaking them? The older w124's were much simpler to remove but these grills look nothing like those. I can just barely see one of what I believe are the mounting posts for the speaker grill from inside the trunk but can't get to it to remove it's little clip. I'd really rather not break them. #1 · Apr 18, 2017 This car has the fancy radio, woofers in doors, three way in rear deck. I broke both of my posts. Even if you do get the clips off, there is a good chance you will lose at least one and an even better chance you'll never be able to get them back on. At least with the shelf in place. The good news, for me anyway, is that the covers went back on reasonably well without the clips. The hardest part is getting the rear shelf carpet back into the groove on the sides. When you try to push the covers back down, they just push the carpet down. It was a very frustrating experience for me, and I will be doing it again soon. Ugh. #4 · Apr 18, 2017 On the late model cars, the easiest way for grille removal is to push towards the pillar and pull up. A heavy duty trim removal tool goes a long way to get this done without breaking anything. #5 · Apr 18, 2017 (Edited) What puzzles me is I keep reading different ways to do it. One thread on here shows my exact grill in a 400e and the guy puts a putty knife under the inboard (near headrest) edge and prys up and says they come right out. The gentleman above says move them toward the C pillar. I can observe on my car, from what little I can tell, that there are two clips that slide under the rear deck cover facing toward the front of the car such that anything other than rearward motion is not going to release them, and what I believe is a post at the rear going down through the rear deck cover with one of those little serrated friction push on washers on it, and the grill will move inboard a bit at the front but not for or aft at all, and the inboard edge is fixed solid on something. What a pain in the rear. Example: http://www.benzworld.org/forums/w124-e-ce-d-td-class/1727127-help-remove-rear-speakers-cover-2.html I don't see the little pin that I think I see facing downward on his at all, perhaps they were previously broken off? Example 2: http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum...om/shopforum/mercedes-used-parts-sale-wanted/332086-sale-parts-1993-400e-3.html Sure looks like maybe they do pry up at the rear and slide back? I don't see the protruding pin I thought I saw on mine from below there anywhere. #6 · Apr 18, 2017 note that page I linked shows a design change in 05/1991 #7 · Apr 18, 2017 Yes, link 2 above is same year as mine. 0 Reply #8 · Apr 18, 2017 Getting them off is not too bad...getting them back on correctly is near impossible. #9 · Apr 19, 2017 So, problem solved in case anyone comes across this again. I had a heck of a time finding any photos for reference, so here are a few. I selectively and carefully broke it to avoid removing the rear deck, which would be required to remove them correctly and is nuts, shame on you MB. You can see the post broke off in the last photo. The inboard side was TIGHT with those metal clips, I got them to let loose with really careful but forceful prying with a stiff putty knife and was able to jockey it aft enough to disengage the front tangs and pivot the front inboard and up and get the rears loose(and break the post once I saw it). Refitting was easy enough, insert the remaining tang in rear, insert front, slide outward to engage the outer clip thingy. I didn't bother attaching the two inboard metal clips, if it moves from where it sits now I've got bigger problems in life. But yes, those metal clips are almost impossible to get clipped back over the carpet. #12 · Apr 19, 2017 I did so much damage on mine and ended up gluing the parts, upholster the resulting so called grills and just put them on the speakers without clipping them in. They were so brittle and broke in some places. I put a peace of cloth back there for the looks and it holds the grills on the sides very well. Talk about improvising. #13 · Apr 19, 2017 I was astounded these did not shatter as much torque as I put on them. Think this old car was in a garage a lot at some stage of it's life. Super lucky.
