Dale Eichler D On my way to work the other morning, I had the unfortunate circumstance of hitting a raccoon and breaking the lowermost portion of the center grill assembly. I contacted VW Vortex OEM parts and ordered a new one and am awaiting it's arrival. I was instructed by one of their technicians to remove the two torx-head fasteners that hold the upper grill assembly in place, pull it out and up thus gaining access to the lower assembly. I was then told that the lower grill simply snaps in place from the back-side of the bumper cover. It appears that this is indeed how it's done and the lower grill can be lifted out between the core support and nose piece. If anyone has had to duplicate this procedure, any input would be greatly appreciated before I begin the job myself. Additionally, if this is the correct method, I will make a video of the involved steps and upload it for the future reference of others. #1 · Oct 24, 2015 On my way to work the other morning, I had the unfortunate circumstance of hitting a raccoon and breaking the lowermost portion of the center grill assembly. It's a delicate tedious job. http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?7132288-Fog-Light-Grill-Removal #3 · Oct 24, 2015 I watched the video and believe this would be the correct course of action to take in gaining access to; and replacing the grill. Thank you very much for the information. Prosit! #4 · Oct 24, 2015 Good luck to you, take your time. Have a soft blanket to lay the bumper on to prevent scratches. When reattaching the bumper be careful with the tore easterners in the wheel well. These are the ones that seems to force the bumper too close to the front quarter panels and in some cases paint has peeled on the softer plastic bumper. The lower grill has MANY tabs. Be sure you have a soft trim removal tool to unclick the dozens of clips. #5 · Oct 24, 2015 A good friend of mine and I are going to undertake this task as soon as the components arrive. He and I are both adept mechanics and have all the proper tools to accomplish the job. We possess a great deal of patience and to ensure that the job is done to perfection; there will be some of Shiner Brewery's newest blend awaiting us upon completion: Wicked Ram IPA.:laugh: Prosit! #6 · Nov 7, 2015 Update 6 Nov 2016: I just wanted to give a quick follow-up on the lower grill replacement. You were quite correct that it's a tedious job. Not so much the bumper cover removal but the grill itself. It took the two of us to remove each individual clip that holds the grill in place. In all, it took about 1-1/2 hours from beginning to end and was then followed by the consumption of some Shiner White Wing Belgian ale. Thanks again for your input and guidance. PROSIT!;) #7 · Mar 5, 2018 I am about to replace my lower grille and foglight bumper...any tips? Your post was very helpful in pointing me in the right direction to replace my lower grille and foglight bumper after a very similar encounter with some road debris. Some yahoo lost some rocks, or pieces of concrete from the back of his truck. While I'm disappointed to have to replace these components, I feel fortunate that there was no more damage done to the vehicle other than parts I can replace relatively easily. I'm feeling pretty comfortable with the removal of the bumper assembly, but it sounds like the lower grille clip removal was the hardest part of this procedure. Do you (or anyone else) have any suggestions for how to release these clips? I'm familiar with clips on other cars, but this is my first VW, and I'm not sure if there is anything different. It looks like a "soft trim removal tool" is suggested in an earlier post, any particular style or manufacturer suggested for this? Thanks! Kiel #8 · Mar 31, 2018 (Edited) . #9 · Mar 31, 2018
