Seong Gi-hun (Korean: 성기훈), designated as Player 456, is the main protagonist of Netflix's K-drama Squid Game. He is a divorced and indebted chauffeur, a former assembly worker, and an obsessed gambler. He is also the archenemy of the Front Man.
Gi-hun is invited to play a series of children's games, the Squid Game, for a chance at a large cash prize. He accepts the offer to settle his debts without initially knowing about the horrors of the games: lethal consequences for eliminated players. During the 33rd Squid Game, Gi-hun reunites with his childhood best friend Cho Sang-woo. The two friends form a team to survive the games, being joined by other players, including Ali Abdul, Oh Il-nam, Kang Sae-byeok, Ji-yeong and Han Mi-nyeo.
After emerging as the only survivor of the 33rd Game, a traumatized Gi-hun became determined to uncover the people responsible for the games. This leads him to return to the Squid Game as a contestant once more to put an end to the competitions from the inside, helping people along the way. Ultimately, Gi-hun sacrifices himself in the final game to ensure the life of Kim Jun-hee's infant daughter. However, his efforts to destroy the operation succeed due to Gi-hun's ally: detective Hwang Jun-ho.
He was portrayed by Lee Jung-jae (who plays as Sol in Star Wars: The Acolyte), and by Kim Yeon-ung as a child. In the English dub, he is voiced by Greg Chun (who also voiced Ike in Fire Emblem franchise and Henry Wu in Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous.

Personality[]
| “ | You don't trust people because they are trustworthy. You do it because you have nothing else to rely on. | „ |
| ~ Seong Gi-hun to Kang Sae-byeok. |
Gi-hun is a very good-hearted, but struggling parent and son. He is also a good, caring and loyal friend, who values trust and companionship. Gi-hun is a sociable, charismatic and talkative person. He is very protective over his family and friends, and his kindness also brings out the good in others around him. Gi-hun is also quick to recognize and praise his friends' qualities. This is shown in the deep admiration he has for his childhood best friend Cho Sang-woo, causing Gi-hun to constantly brag about his friend's intelligence and accomplishments. Gi-hun also becomes impressed with Ali Abdul, who saves his life during the first game. Grateful, Gi-hun compliments Ali's strength and calls him a "savior".
Despite his qualities, Gi-hun often shows to be very naive and at times childish. His recklessness and gamble addiction also left him with a severe debt and got him into trouble with the Loan Sharks. It is also the reason why his wife divorced him. The addiction would make him even use his mother's money to bet in horse races, leaving not only him but also his mother with financial problems. In addition, his carelessness would ultimately cause him to get robbed by Sae-byeok, be unable to pay his debts to the loan sharks, and lose the gift he would intend to give to his daughter. Despite his mistakes and flaws, Gi-hun recognizes them and is willing to improve for his family. He joins the Squid Game thinking in use the money to be a better father for his ten-year-old daughter and to save the life of his sickly mother.
He is at his core a kind and sensitive individual that becomes scarred by the deaths in the competition. Gi-hun strongly protests when he sees a player being beaten to death by Jang Deok-su in between games. Gi-hun begs the masked staff to something about this murder and is horrified to realize that players killing each other is something allowed. Gi-hun's state of mind shows signs of crumbling after the Tug-of-War game, which is the first time in which players have to kill their opponents to survive a challenge. After this game, Gi-hun looks at his trembling hands feeling guilty for causing others' death to advance. During this same day, after his team set up a barricade to survive the night and defend themselves against Deok-su's gang, Gi-hun is startled when Sang-woo wakes him up and has flashbacks about the violent strike that happened a decade ago, in which he and his companions also had to set up a barricade and stay awake to defend themselves.
During the games, Gi-hun at times shows that he can be smart and resourceful, as when he is able to figure out a way to get out his shape by licking the honeycomb during the second game. Afterwards, Gi-hun remembers Sang-woo calling him and then hesitantly giving up on telling him something before the Dalgona game, causing him to correctly suspect that his friend had decided not to reveal that he guessed the game, although Gi-hun forgives Sang-woo and pretends not to have realized this, as he still trusts his friend. This shows that Gi-hun can be observant, or at least that he knows his childhood best friend very well. After the riot started by Deok-su's gang, Gi-hun is also the one who suggests his team to set up the barricade using the metal parts of the beds of the dormitory. Right after, Gi-hun is even able to convince Deok-su not to start another riot by inciting the gangster's distrust of his own teammates, reminding Deok-su that the members of his gang could betray him to take out the strongest on the team if there is another night fight. In the final game, Gi-hun grabs dirt from the ground before the game begins and then manages to cross to the other side of the squid's waist after distracting Sang-woo by throwing the dirt in his eyes.
Despite his intelligence, Gi-hun is very clumsy and often sees himself being helped and saved by others and/or by his own luck. Gi-hun survives the first and special games with Sang-woo and Ali's help; he survives the Tug-of-War thanks to Il-nam's and Sang-woo's strategies; he ultimately wins the Marbles game because Il-nam decides to give him the last marble and let him win; he survives the Glass Stepping Stones game because he luckily ends up with the last number and only has to follow the other players in front of him; he wins the last game but then wants to stop before claiming victory and could have died if Sang-woo decided to kill him instead of sacrificing himself. Because of this, Gi-hun values the help of others and teamwork as a way of surviving the games. He is also the first one among his group to suggest the formation of a team to play in the games. Despite his group not officially having a leader, Gi-hun and Sang-woo usually act together as co-leaders, making all the decisions and planning for their team.
Gi-hun is shown to be optimistic even against terrible odds, which also often comes from his naive side. He encourages Sang-woo to start fresh and believes his childhood friend will be able to simply regain all the money to repay his debts because of his intelligence. Before the final game, Gi-hun is confident that he and Kang Sae-byeok will win and share the prize. Upon finding out that the girl is mortally wounded, Gi-hun believes she can be saved, despite her profuse blood loss and the masked staff showing no signs of be willing to help players throughout the entire competition. During the Squid Game, Gi-hun is willing to give up on the game to save Sang-woo and simply go home, despite that this will cause them both to return to their miserable lives without the money.
As a kind-hearted person, his determination to win and survive inside the cruel reality of the competition clashes with his morals. At times, despite being remorseful, Gi-hun is willing to cheat to survive. This is seen when he takes advantage of Il-nam's supposed dementia by tricking him to steal his marbles and win the fourth game. Also, despite being against killing, the games cause Gi-hun to be more willing to do it when angered. After arguing with his childhood best friend, he tries to kill Sang-woo in his sleep until he is stopped by Sae-byeok. When his friend kills a dying Sae-byeok, an infuriated Gi-hun tries to attack Sang-woo with a knife but is stopped by a soldier. Upon discovering that Il-nam is the true mastermind behind the games, Gi-hun threats the old man on his deathbed. They make a bet and Gi-hun promises to kill Il-nam if he loses, although Il-nam then dies from his brain tumor, causing Gi-hun to be unable to fulfill his word after winning. On the other hand, despite needing the money to solve his financial problems, Gi-hun is also often willing to give up on the games, especially for the sake of others. He votes in favor of the termination of the Squid Game after the first game and is willing to do the same to save Sae-byeok's and later Sang-woo's life. He is the type of person that is determined to accomplish his own goals but will stop everything if he can help a loved person in peril. Overall, Gi-hun acts more on his emotions than on logic, and thinking more about a present situation than in the future consequences of his actions.
Gi-hun's care and good heart also makes others sympathize and be willing to help him. Sae-byeok, who is really distrustful, solitary and reluctant to work with anyone, bonds with him upon recognizing his kindness. After Gi-hun invited Sae-byeok to join his team as a way of protecting herself against Deok-su's gang, she eventually accepts the offer and befriends him, to the point that she ends up entrusting her little brother to his care. Sang-woo, who is in the games putting his own goal and survival as priority, shows care for Gi-hun and helps him several times. Sang-woo is emotionally moved by Gi-hun's selfless attempt to save him in the final game, so he ultimately decides to sacrifice himself for his friend to win and trusts that Gi-hun will help his mother. Even Il-nam, who is the creator of these cruel games and seems to be desensitized by the death of others, recognizes Gi-hun's kind nature. Gi-hun takes care of Il-nam during the games and even chooses him as his game partner when he realizes no one else will team up with the old man in the fourth game. In turn, Il-nam enjoys Gi-hun's companionship and has fun playing with him. This results in Il-nam letting Gi-hun live by allowing him to win the Marbles game.
Because of his kind nature, Gi-hun also argues strongly against Sang-woo's more harsh methods to survive the games. After Gi-hun witnesses Sang-woo killing Player 017 to complete the Glass Stepping Stones game within time limit, the two friends argue because of their differences in approach to the games. Gi-hun values the others' help to survive and is not so willing to break alliances to advance, while Sang-woo values his own efforts and is willing to get his hands dirty to move forward. Gi-hun learned from experience that winners exist because of the losers while Sang-woo thinks that he can only win by turning others into losers.[1] The two of them have different personal experiences throughout the games, so there is truth in both their points of view, but the disagreement leads them to fall out with each other.
After Sang-woo isolated himself, he eventually ends up killing a dying Sae-byeok, making Gi-hun enraged with him. Despite this, during their mortal confrontation in the Squid Game, Gi-hun ultimately cannot bring himself to kill Sang-woo when he has the chance to do it. This shows that even with his own rage at Sang-woo's betrayal, Gi-hun still sees him as a dear friend. Not wanting to lose Sang-woo to the games, Gi-hun even attempts to stop the final game to save him. This fails, as Sang-woo rejects the offer and sacrifices himself for Gi-hun to win. The death of his childhood best friend is the last straw that deeply traumatizes Gi-hun in the games, causing him to break down in tears while holding Sang-woo's lifeless body. Gi-hun is left alive but utterly heartbroken for not being able to save anyone. Upon finding his mother dead after returning home, Gi-hun is so emotionally drained that he is not even able to cry for her.
After losing so much in the games, Gi-hun is not only deeply traumatized but also feels that his victory is hollow, making him fall into depression. The money is a reminder of everyone who died in the competition, so Gi-hun does not even want to touch it, and he doesn't do so for an entire year before being confronted by Il-nam. Although completely infuriated upon finding out he was fooled by Il-nam and that the games were created for rich people's entertainment, learning the truth also fills Gi-hun with a new purpose. Despite not being able to go back as he was, Gi-hun knows that his friends died in the games for their goals to be accomplished, so he finally decides to fulfill the dying wishes of Sang-woo and Sae-byeok. Gi-hun also shows to be willing to fight against the Squid Games and its organization to prevent anyone else to go through the same that he and his friends did.
In the second and third seasons, due to the massive trauma he suffered from watching all of his friends die in the 33rd Squid Game, he develops a desire to stop them from hurting others, as well as something of a savior complex, wanting to prevent others in the game from suffering his fate. However, his failure to convince some of the players in the 34th Squid Game to join him is partly a result of his optimism and desire to save everyone, as he fails to realize that some simply will not share his views no matter what. In addition, while he chooses not to kill anyone in an effort to not become like the ones who run the Squid Games, this leads him to make some hypocritical decisions of saving some of the O-voters for continuing the game at the detriment of some of the X-voters. The most egregious example of this is his plan at the end of Season 2, where the O-voters plan to start a riot to kill some of the X-voters, and he chooses not to warn the X-voters of this riot, in order to use the chaos to take down the guards who would intervene and then attempt to infiltrate the control room. This would also demonstrate how his savior complex would lead him to extremism.
Upon failure, his sense of optimism drops severely, shutting himself off from others due to his struggle to internalize how much of the damage was his fault. This would also contradict his ability to recognize his flaws, as in the Assassin round of the 34th Squid Game, when he was assigned as a killer, he chose to kill Dae-ho upon being told of how Dae-ho's inability to go back to the dormitory and retrieve more ammo would partially result in the other soldiers not having enough to combat the guards any longer, resulting in all but one getting killed. This would prompt him to choose Dae-ho to kill in this coming round of the games, projecting his guilt onto Dae-ho until he finally killed him, only truly internalizing his fault in the rebellion after this. It would then take one of the players on his team Geum-ja to motivate him to go back to his old self, before she committed suicide. From the second half of Season 3, Gi-hun returns to his normal self.
In spite of Gi-hun's flaws being shown in detail in Season 2 and 3, his biggest act of selflessness would be shown in his final act of sacrificing himself to save Jun-hee's child, a newborn baby, declaring the baby the winner of the games, and allowing the baby's money to be used to help others, including his own daughter. As such, while his daughter did grow up thinking her father did not truly care for her and would grow bitter feelings for him, it was made more than clear throughout the show that he indeed loved her, and that everything he did was out of a desire to help her and others.

Trivia[]
- In the series, it is stated that his age is 47 in 2020, despite Seong Gi-hun saying that his birthday is in October 31, 1974. This is because one year is added after birth in the Korean age, making him 47 in 2020 and 48 in 2021. His death is in 2024, making him 50 when he died.
- Hwang Dong-hyuk (the director of the series) explained that Cho Sang-woo and Seong Gi-hun were named after two of his friends in real life and are two sides of himself: Similar to Gi-hun, he was raised in Ssangmun-dong by a single mother in a financially troubled environment; similar to Sang-woo, he went to Seoul National University and his entire neighbourhood praised him and had high expectations of him.[2]
- Part of the casting of Gi-hun and Sang-woo in the series was to make the two characters look like fraternal twins because Dong-hyuk wanted them to emulate this relationship. Dong-hyuk said that this relationship expresses the journey of the two characters, explaining that fraternal twins are from the same mother, but look different just like Gi-hun and Sang-woo. They share memories, play and grow up together, but they eventually go on different paths; Sang-woo was on the track of success and Gi-hun was on the track of failure, however, they later meet in the games because in an extremely competitive society anyone can end up with the same outcome in life.[3][4]
- Lee Jung-jae (Gi-hun's actor) also describes Gi-hun and Sang-woo's relationship as "not [biologically] related but still close."[5]
- Dong-hyuk explained that he picked number 456 for Gi-hun in the games, because he wanted the character to be the very last as a way to portray someone who is at the very rock bottom. He also chose this number to have him as the one who starts the vote in the second episode.[6]
- Dong-hyuk joked about Ali Abdul helping Gi-hun in the first game, because if Ali didn't do anything, Gi-hun would have simply fallen to the ground, which seems to be safer than trying to stand still while Ali holds him.[6]
- Like most South Korean people, Gi-hun is lactose intolerant. This is shown when he asked a soldier for chocolate milk, saying that he could not properly digest regular milk ever since he was little.
- Dong-hyuk explains that Gi-hun's attempt to save Kang Sae-byeok is ultimately what gets her killed. Gi-hun banging on the doors and screaming for help ends up waking Sang-woo up. Seeing Gi-hun's desperation, Sang-woo thinks he might give up on the games, causing Sang-woo to kill Sae-byeok to stop it from happening.[7]
- Similarly, Dong-hyuk explained that Sae-byeok's decision to stop Gi-hun from killing Sang-woo in his sleep contributed to her final fate. He says that Sae-byeok saved Sang-woo's life by stopping Gi-hun, but this ironically resulted in her being betrayed and killed by Sang-woo right after.[7]
- However, if Sae-byeok didn't stop Gi-hun from killing Sang-woo, then she would have died shortly after from her mortal injuries, making Gi-hun the winner anyway. In either case, she would have no chance to live: even if Sang-woo didn't kill her, it's unlikely the guards would did anything to help her consider how comfortable they are with players killing each other.
- Similarly, Dong-hyuk explained that Sae-byeok's decision to stop Gi-hun from killing Sang-woo in his sleep contributed to her final fate. He says that Sae-byeok saved Sang-woo's life by stopping Gi-hun, but this ironically resulted in her being betrayed and killed by Sang-woo right after.[7]
- When the stepfather gave Gi-hun the money under the condition that he never met his daughter ever again, he refused and snapped at him, revealing that he doesn't accept money as the answer to everything. The best example of this is after the 33rd Squid Game, as Gi-hun becomes far more miserable after winning to the point he can't even bring himself to use the prize money.
- In the finale of Season 1, Gi-hun stopped a man from joining the Squid Game after the Recruiter gave him the invitation. This effort might have been in vain since a player portrayed by the same actor died in the 37th Squid Game. It's not confirmed, however, that this player is the same character that Gi-hun met in the Season 1 finale.
- Gi-hun might have developed Savior Complex after the trauma in the 33rd Squid Game, an attitude which a person believes they are responsible for helping other people.
- He and In-ho are the only known players who know that Oh Il-nam is the mastermind of the game.
- They are also the only two characters who appear in all episodes.
- Due to how iconic Lee Jung-jae is as Seong Gi-hun, people have been associating many of Lee's roles and cameos in other movies and arts with Gi-hun, one prime example is Master Sol from The Acolytes.
- At the beginning of Season 2, it's unknown how Gi-hun knew what the Front Man look like in his nightmare, as he hadn't seen his appearance at that time and was wearing a blindfold the only time the two talked at the end of Season 1.
- His quote "I've played these games before" has become a meme in the Squid Game community, with creating their own version of the quote based on the situation.
- In the final round of Mingle, Gi-hun paired up with Dae-ho. Ironically, he would later kill Dae-ho. This is also the case with Jung-bae being paired with In-ho and Yong-sik being paired with Geum-ja, to which one of the partners would later kill the one paired with them.
- Despite Gi-hun's limited interaction with Thanos, in real life, Lee Jung-jae is a very good friend of T.O.P. In fact, it was Jung-jae who provided T.O.P. the opportunity to be cast in Squid Game.
- Ironically, Gi-hun's decision to let the Os slaughter the Xs so he could start the rebellion is the main reason behind its failure, since it was this decision that caused the Front Man to see him as no better than him and the Pink Guards, due to him being willing to make a "small sacrifice for the greater good", which is the reason why he went from genuinely want to support it to thwarting it.
- In season 2, the way Gi-hun attempts to attack the Front Man for killing Jung-bae, only for the soldiers to pin him to the ground, is identical to how he attempts to attack Sang-woo for killing Sae-byeok in season 1.
- He, Kang Dae-ho, Cho Hyun-ju and Park Gyeong-seok are the only members of the rebellion team who weren't killed when the rebellion failed.
- He and Park Yong-sik are the only characters on this wiki to be Seekers in Hide-and-Seek.
- He's the only player in the 37th Squid Game to know Oh Young-il's true identity as the Front Man.
- In the 37th Squid Game, Gi-hun and Park Min-su are the only members of Team X in the final game. Lee Myung-gi was also a member of Team X when he became a finalist, but he changed to Team O during the last vote.
- Gi-hun is also the only finalist of the 37th Squid Game on this wiki.
- Gi-hun is the only member of the rebellion team to become a finalist.
- When Seon-nyeo first met Gi-hun, she told him "You have souls hovering over your head who are lingering in this world. You're not here of your own will, those vengeful souls brought you", which refers to those who died in the 33rd Squid Game because they are the reason Gi-hun wanted to rejoin the games. This is true especially for Sang-woo and Sae-byeok, as Gi-hun is haunted by them as seen in the nightmare in the beginning of Season 2 and the hallucination with Sae-byeok in Season 3.
- Gi-hun's role in protecting Jun-hee's baby and sacrifice in Season 3 were foreshadowed in Season 2 by Seon-nyeo, the Shaman of the Sea. During the Mingle game, while in a room with Gi-hun and Jun-hee, Seon-nyeo looks between Jun-hee's pregnant belly and Gi-hun and says that she knows why Gi-hun had "lived longer than he should have" and that there was a reason behind his return to the games tied to fate, implying that fate only let Gi-hun live that long to help Jun-hee's daughter survive the Squid Game.
- In the Jump Rope game, Gi-hun says he will return to help Jun-hee to cross the bridge, however, he wasn't aware of how badly injured her ankle was and his efforts would likely have been in vain. And even if he had saved her during that game, her condition would made her vulnerable and an easy target for the Os during the rest of the Squid Game.
- In the 37th Squid Game, Gi-hun once again trusted a player with the number 001 ("Oh Young-il") and became friends with them, despite being tricked by Oh Il-nam (the creator of the games) in the 33rd Squid Game. And that player was once again someone from the Squid Game staff who had infiltrated the games, but Gi-hun didn't suspect it again and only learned the truth when the Front Man revealed himself, showing that Gi-hun still can be too trusting.
- Gi-hun sacrificing himself so Jun-hee's baby can win the game and take the prize money mirrors how in the 33th Squid Game, Sang-woo sacrificed himself so Gi-hun could win and take the prize money.
- The death of Seong Gi-hun caused shock among fans, who assumed that Gi-hun survived the fall because his eyes continued to blink slowly. However, even if Gi-hun barely survived the fall, the explosion left him with no chance of survival.
- Director Hwang Dong-hyuk later stated in an interview that the character had to die because there was no happy ending in store for him, confirming that the hero really died.[8]
- Later, fans speculated that Gi-hun had a small chance of surviving the explosion if the debris shielded him. They likely compared his fate to Eddie Brock's, who was saved from the explosion by a door. Even if the director Hwang Dong-hyuk or another director decides to bring back the protagonist, it's unlikely they would use this method.
- Although most of the fans on YouTube used a neural network to make fake trailers for the fourth season/American spin-off with a live Gi-hun who was lucky enough to survive the fall and explosion, but most likely for the sake of a rofl, rather than for the hope of a potential "resurrection."
- An in-universe explanation has also been suggested by some fans, which posits that Gi-hun barely survived the fall and lived just long enough the see the Squid Games facilities being destroyed, mirroring the way Oh Il-nam died at the end of Season One, after seeing his worldview disproven.
- Even if his death remains irreversible, there is a possibility of his return through hallucinations or visions in a dream (if In-ho or Jun-ho or Seong Ga-yeong return in the future). The director stated that if Gi-hun returns, it will be in flashbacks at most, and it is possible that he will return in that way in the future, since the franchise will continue after his death.
- Despite Gi-hun planning to win the Squid Game with other players in both games he participated in and the rules not specifying the number of winners (they simply state that all players who completed all 6 games can go home with the prize money), the list of winners in the archives shows only one winner per year. This suggests that the staff and the VIPs manipulate the games so that they have only one survivor every time.
- Alongside Park Min-su's and Lee Seung-won's, his death is one of the three deaths that counted to the advance to the next plataform during of Sky Squid Game.
- Gi-hun's death is similar to Cho Sang-woo's death in following ways:
- Both of them died after a fight.
- Both of them were the last players to die in the competition.
- Their deaths had the same somber background music.
- Both of their deaths were suicides to protect another person; Sang-woo killed himself to save Gi-hun, while Gi-hun killed himself to save Jun-hee's baby.
- Gi-hun had the second-highest kill count out of all the finalists in the 37th Squid Game, surpassed by only Lee Myung-gi.
- Gi-hun is the last Seeker to get a kill. Ironically, he would have been the first Seeker to pass the game if he had killed Player 197.
- What make Gi-hun's death more sad is that he died thinking that he failed to save everyone and the game is still going on, not knowing that he actually succeeded in ending the Korean franchise, even if the Squid Game franchise is working in a global scope, meaning his victory may not have any significant impact.
- Additionally, his daughter stated to Hwang In-ho that she doesn't wants anything to do with him anymore and will pretend that he no longer exist, oblivious that she doesn't have to pretend.
- However, it is unlikely that she will forget him after learning that he is dead, as she loved him. Therefore, it is most likely that Gi-hun will return through dreams and hallucinations if his daughter returns to the American spin-off.
- In addition, Gi-hun can still influence the stopping of the games if Hwang In-ho and/or Seong Ga-yeon continue Gi-hun's mission to stop the games by appearing to one or both of them as visions in dream or hallucinations.
- His sacrifice for the baby shows that even in death, he still won against Oh Il-nam. Also, while Il-nam succeed in corrupting In-ho, he failed to do the same with Gi-hun.
- Originally, Director Hwang planned for Gi-hun to continue his last line with: "As humans, this is what we should do. As humans, this is how we should be. And starting now, this is how we can turn this world of ours into a better one." However, it was changed in order to finish the sentence with an impactful action and leave the remaining of the statement open to interpretation.
- Gi-hun would most likely kill Seon-nyeo or Im Jeong-dae to pass Hide-and-Seek if he didn't focused on Dae-ho, considered that both of them previously mocks him for the failed rebellion, with Gi-hun even snapped at Seon-nyeo and attempted to strangle her.
- Gi-hun's kindness pay off before Glass Stepping Stones: If he refused to exchange his vest with Player 096, he would have died in his place.
- Gi-hun is the known player to have become a finalist twice, and for a brief moment, he was believed to be the only player to have won twice.
- Gi-hun swear on his mother's name that he won't harass Sae-byeok anymore if she untie him, but immediately broke his promise once his hand is untied, and she mocks him for having so little value for his mother. By the finale, Gi-hun won the game only to find out his mother had passed away.
