Seong Gi-hun to the Squid Game organizers in "One Lucky Day"

Seong Gi-hun (성기훈 Seong Gi-hun?, born October 31, 1974)[1], also known as Player 456, is the winner of the 33rd Squid Game in 2020 who returned as a contestant in the Squid Game in 2024 in an ongoing attempt to end the Squid Games.[3][4] A former gambling addict, Gi-hun faced crippling debt from loan sharks for many years before participating in, and ultimately winning the Squid Game in 2020.[5][6]

Born in Ssangmun-dong, Gi-hun was childhood best friends[7][8][9] with Cho Sang-woo. He worked as a Dragon Motors employee, along with his best friend Park Jung-bae, for sixteen years. After he was laid off in 2011 due to the owner's inability to pay his employees, Gi-hun worked in several odd jobs. He also owned a fried chicken restaurant and a snack bar, both of which failed. He also had a five-year career as a chauffeur. In 2009, Gi-hun got married and had a daughter in 2011, but her custody was granted to his wife after their divorce in 2017. By 2020, Gi-hun was living with his mother and had developed an addiction to horse race betting, which resulted in him being in debt to a group of loan sharks who threatened him with physical violence if he didn't pay up. Gi-hun also found out from his mother that he was a year away from losing contact with his daughter, who would be moving to the United States with her mother and stepfather.

Gi-hun became aware of the Squid Game when a recruiter informed him about them after they played ddakji. Gi-hun accepted the offer to join the Squid Game in hopes of winning a large amount of money to pay back his large debts and his mother's hospital bills, gain back custody of his daughter, and secure a good life for him and his family. In the first game, Gi-hun was reunited with Cho Sang-woo and a girl who pickpocketed him, Kang Sae-byeok. He was saved during the game's climax by Ali Abdul. Throughout the games, Gi-hun formed an alliance with the aforementioned players and Player 001, and frequently showed compassion towards them. As the games increased in their brutality and the competitors were becoming more demoralized, Gi-hun slowly lost his desire to win the money and instead only continued to try and survive. Alongside Sang-woo and Sae-byeok, Gi-hun became one of the finalists of the competition, and faced off against Sang-woo in the sixth and final game due to Sae-byeok being killed by Sang-woo. After automatically winning the sixth and final game following Sang-woo's suicide, Gi-hun was returned to Seoul with a bank card to access the prize money, but when he returned home to tell his mother he could afford her treatment, he discovered that she had died.

A year after his win, Gi-hun was still traumatized and hadn't touched any of the prize money. He received an invitation card from his gganbu, and was furious and disgusted when it was revealed that Oh Il-nam, the old man Gi-hun had befriended, had created the game to entertain bored ultra-rich people like himself. After the two made one last bet which Gi-hun won, Il-nam died shortly after. Gi-hun retrieved Sae-byeok's younger brother Kang Cheol and entrusted him to Sang-woo's mother, giving them a share of the prize money. After Gi-hun travelled to the airport to reconnect with his daughter in Los Angeles, he saw the same recruiter playing ddakji with another desperate person in debt. Gi-hun took the person's invitation card and called the number before boarding his plane, demanding to know who is running the games. He then went against the Front Man's suggestion of getting on the plane and walked away from the airport.

Two years later, Gi-hun has been searching for the recruiter relentlessly. They eventually meet and play a game of Russian Roulette, in which the recruiter dies and Gi-hun finds a card in his jacket. The card leads him to a party where a pink lair takes him to a limo where he talks to the Front Man, asking him to return to the game. Gi-hun returns to the game and warns the players in the "Red Light, Green Light" game, helping most of them survive. He then plays a six-legged pentathlon, which Gi-hun and his team narrowly win, and the pairs game Mingle, which he also survives. Before a fight breaks out, Gi-hun and his team come up with a plan to end the game, starting a revolt. The plan fails and he is confronted by the Front Man, asking him if it was worth it and kills Jung-bae, leaving Gi-hun devastated.

Personality

"You don't trust people because they are trustworthy. You do it because you have nothing else to rely on."

Seong Gi-hun's advice to Kang Sae-byeok in "Stick to the Team"

Gi-hun is shown to be a friendly, nice, caring, and talkative individual, often engaging to converse with those around him. He frequently demonstrates his caring and thoughtful nature, as he takes it upon himself to look after Oh Il-nam and to protect Kang Sae-byeok from Jang Deok-su.[10] During Red Light, Green Light, Gi-hun was frozen in shock throughout most of the game.

He seems to suffer from a serious ludopathy, often gambling any money he gets on races. The seriousness of his disease often makes him not realize the consequences of his actions until it's too late, such as canceling the social security of his mother before knowing about her diabetes or owing a great amount of money to the loan sharks to the point of being forced to sign a document authorizing his creditors to sell parts of his body in order to pay off his debt.

Gi-hun's darker actions are often made out of desperation rather than out of selfishness or cruelty, such as his manipulation of Il-nam during the Marbles round: Gi-hun weeps during the game and displays signs of remorse and sorrow following Il-nam's "elimination".[11] He also planned to kill Sang-woo when he falls asleep before the start of the sixth game until he is talked out of it by Sae-byeok, who tells him he is not a murderer.

Despite his failures as a father and son, Gi-hun does demonstrate that he deeply cares for his family. He is devastated at the idea of losing his daughter and desperately tries to convince his mother to get medical treatment for her diabetes, falling into a year-long depressive state after her death. Following the games, he developed PTSD and stopped a man from entering the games to prevent the man's death and worked to stop the games for three years straight. After failing to persuade the Front Man to end the Squid Game, he decides to enter the 36th Squid Game in order to infiltrate the Game and kill its staff. He helps contestants in "Red Light, Green Light" instructing them on what to do to survive and continually encourages people to vote to leave the game, warning them of what the future holds. Showing him to be a very selfless, brave and caring individual, willing to put his life in danger to help others. Though later in the games, he is shown to be willing to sacrifice a few (some contestants) for the greater good (kill the game's staff and end the game).

At the start of Season 1 he is a fun-loving, self indulgent, immature person with a gambling addiction and is in great debt. He decides to enter the Squid Game in order to pay off his debts, prevent his organs from being harvested (by his loan shark) and pay for his mother's treatment for advanced diabetes. In Season 2, he returns a more mature, serious, shrewd and frugal person. He sees his prize money as blood money belonging to the people who died in the game and uses its very carefully. He becomes more determined with his objectives, as well as more meticulous with his surroundings and grows more careful around others, displaying highly analytical behavior. In stark contrast to his previous behavior in season 1, Gi-hun becomes more determined to save as much of the players in the Squid Game as he can, rather than just the ones in his team.

However, despite the change in his attitude, his ignorant and reckless nature remains. He failed to consider different possibilites before entering the game, which led to the failure of his initial plan. Even in the game, he often appears clumsy, such as failing to recognize the front man despite several clues. His foolish nature results in a terrible consequence in the revolt, which was incredibly unpractical considering how powerful his enemies were. He and the rebels are, as expected, quickly overpowered by the game's forces, ultimately resulting in the death of his close friend. This failure of the revolt shows that that despite his efforts, he is still too flawed a person to carry out such an ambitious plan.

As Cho Sang-woo ("Because you’re a nosy-ass idiot who’s too slow to keep it shut.") and Hwang In-ho ("Did you have fun playing the hero?") described, Gi-hun is overwhelmed with the sense of justice, and sometimes for the worse. It is mainly due to his aforementioned flaws. He also becomes contradictory about his supposed 'justice', as before the special game, he stated that no one in his team should be sacrificed, whereas in the revolt, he claimed that it is inevitable to sacrifice a few for the survival of many.

Seong Gi-hun was described by Hwang Dong-hyuk as very 'human'. This means that, despite his altruistic and righteous nature, he is highly flawed and often faced with failure. At the end, what matters the most is that he has never lost his human nature, unlike Hwang In-ho, his arch enemy, who has succumbed to despair and hate and ended up a cold-blooded villain.

History

Backstory

Young Gi-hun

Gi-hun playing Squid Game as a child.

Seong Gi-hun was born on October 31, 1974, in Ssangmun-dong, Seoul, where he grew up with his mother Oh Mal-soon and remained in as an adult. He was childhood best friends with Cho Sang-woo, with whom he developed a very close and brotherly relationship.[7][8] They would play multiple children's games together, including Squid Game, Red Light, Green Light and Dalgona. When playing and winning Squid Game, Gi-hun stated he felt as though he owned the entire world at that moment. During his youth, he attended Daehan Technical High School.

Gi-hun worked on Assembly Team One at Dragon Motors, with his best friend Park Jung-bae, for sixteen years. However, he was later laid off and went on strike with his other employees. During the strike, one of his coworkers died. This happened to be the same day his daughter, Seong Ga-yeong, was born. In the following years, Gi-hun ran a restaurant called Ga-yeong's Chicken and later a snack bar, both of which eventually failed, and he worked as a chauffeur for five years.[12][1] After divorcing his wife, Kang Eun-ji, she got custody of their daughter and remarried. Her new husband disliked Gi-hun seeing Ga-yeong to Gi-hun's anger and consternation.

2020

A debt-ridden chauffeur and gambling addict, Gi-hun initially depended upon his mother for financial support and became heavily indebted to loan sharks. After winning a game of Ddakji with a salesman in a Seoul Metro station, Gi-hun was given an invitation to participate in the 33rd Squid Game. He agreed to enter the Squid Game to pay off his debts and be able to financially support his daughter, so she would not have to move away from South Korea with her mother.[12]

After surviving the first round with help from another player, Gi-hun was among the majority of contestants who voted to withdraw from the competition, but he ultimately decided to voluntarily return after realizing that his daughter would be going to the United States of America with her mother and step-father, meaning that there were no means of keeping his child with him otherwise.[13] He quickly connected with several other players, including his childhood best friend Cho Sang-woo, as well as Oh Il-nam, Kang Sae-byeok, and Ali Abdul.[14][10] As he progressed through the rounds, Gi-hun demonstrated empathy and compassion toward his fellow players. However, he also showed a capacity for manipulation and deception when necessary to survive, such as when he regretfully tricked Il-nam during a game of Marbles.[11]

Gi-hun was one of two survivors to make it to the final round of the competition, along with Sang-woo, who by now had become his rival. The two faced off in a Squid Game, which Gi-hun won, after which he attempted to end the games prematurely in order to spare Sang-woo's life. However, Sang-woo killed himself, crowning Gi-hun as the official winner of the 33rd Squid Game. He was set free with ₩45.6 billion in prize money. He later on discovered that his mother had passed away from her diabetes. Despite having the prize money, he was so traumatized and disillusioned by the games and what had cost him that he didn't spend any of the money, instead living an aimless life in a hopeless state of mind.[5]

Gi-hun 2021

Gi-hun calling off his trip to America.

One year after the conclusion of the 33rd Squid Game, Gi-hun visited Il-nam in the Seoul Sky Tower, where the old man was waiting for his end. Gi-hun became furious as he found Il-nam was the creator and mastermind of the Games and he sought the reasons for the existence of such a cruel game. Il-nam died in the presence of Gi-hun. Upon leaving the hospital, Gi-hun decided to have a new start in his life, changing his looks and reinvigorating himself. He found Sae-byeok's younger brother and took him to Sang-woo's mother, gifting her a portion of his prize money.

Gi-hun made arrangements to visit the United States to reconnect with his daughter. However, he accidentally found the same Salesman who had invited him recruiting other contestants for future Squid Games, whom he attempted to chase only to find him escaping on a metro. Gi-hun immediately seized the card from the man who had played with the salesman. While boarding his flight to the United States, he called the game's organizers using the number on the card he seized, requesting that they stop the game. He was advised to stay away from causing problems to future games, indicating that he is still being kept under surveillance by the Squid Game Staff. Despite this, Gi-hun decided to call off his journey to America last minute and started walking back, to seek revenge and fight back against the game's organizers.[5] He then went to the bathroom and removed the tracking chip embedded by the Front Man in his ear to cover his track.

Using his wealth, he hires multiple private detectives including his old loan sharks to track down the Salesman and those that affiliated to the Game as well as locating the island where the Game takes place. He also buys a motel to serve as his base of operation and stocks a huge pile of firearms he bought from the black markets to practice marksmanship as he plans a rebellion within the game. After three years, his endeavour bear no fruit.

Seong Gi-hun to The Salesman

Three years later, Gi-hun is still looking for the recruiter relentlessly, continuing to work with his former loan shark Kim Jeong-rae and his lackeys to track down the recruiter, financing them with large sums of cash for their work. Mr Kim and his friend, Choi Woo-seok continually update Gi-hun with their searches, one day they finally spot the Recruiter playing Ddakji with a victim in a train station in Seoul and report this to Gi-hun via phone.

Choi and Kim then follow the recruiter and watch him interact with a group of homeless people, offering each of them a lottery ticket and a packaged bread, only allowing them to pick one of these- to see most of the homeless people choose the lottery ticket, with the recruiter also offering these people a coin but just to scratch the card, the recruiter is delighted to find all of the homeless people who chose the lottery card fail to win any money. To the shock of Kim, Choi, (watching from nearby and hiding the whole time with newspapers) and the homeless people, the bread the homeless people didn't choose is dropped to the floor by the recruiter who stamps on them gleefully, one homeless man asks him why he is wasting so much good food, the recruiter replies to him and the others that they are the ones that wasted the bread (implying that they should not have picked the lottery card). The homeless people fall into an uproar over the taunting and some approach the recruiter only for them to be beaten up by the sadistic man. Kim and Choi Woo-seok update Gi-hun with this information via phone.

The Recruiter later confronts Gi-hun at his place, where he expresses his curiosity in how Gi-hun was able to win the Squid Games before. Gi-hun then retaliates by insulting the Recruiter a dog to the Squid Games' workers. Angered, the Recruiter explains his needs of sacrifices to achieve his place; initially working at the Games, the Recruiter encountered his father, to which he killed without remorse. Having gained the trust, the Recruiter was hired as the recruiter and given a revolver, and then explains his vision of the poor people, as useless scum and trash.

The Recruiter then uses his revolver for another game of Russian Roulette. However, feeling Gi-hun to be very special, the former applies a rule to which the chamber is not rotated each round, meaning the chances of survival decrease every time. Both Gi-hun and the Recruiter survive twice, in which the latter begin to make it more sadistic by putting the revolver in his mouth. Before Gi-hun shoots the fifth round (giving him only 50% chances of surviving), the Recruiter psychologically tortures Gi-hun, to which he refers as the ability to cheat and shoot The Recruiter, but will show the latter how "trash he is". Gi-hun survives the shot, to The Recruiter's shock. Gi-hun then reverse The Recruiter's words to him, to which Gi-hun affirms that the Recruiter was nothing but a dog. The Recruiter, not accepting the truth, shoots himself and dies instantly.

Kim and Choi then decide to bravely follow the recruiter down an alley way to their own demise, as he beats the men up. After knocking them out, he abducts the friends and locks them into a room, the friends face each other sitting on chairs, tied with ropes and gagged, the Recruiter forces the two now paralysed by shock and fear to play a deadly game of rock paper scissors combined with Russian roulette, which results in Kim's death. The recruiter then gags and ties Choi Woo-seok to a bed in another room.

Police Officer, Hwang Jun-ho who is investigating Seong Gi-hun, finds the man's base of operations, an old motel. The Recruiter confronts Seong here and the two see each other for the first time in years and converse, the recruiter reveals he was once a soldier in the games and killed his own father, a player, and justifies the games' cruelty by labelling the participants as scum, he also tells Seong he has a card in his jacket, with information that will lead him to the Front Man (which Seong had wanted). He challenges Gi-hun into a round of Russian roulette, resulting in his own death.

Hwang Jun-ho enters Gi-hun's base of operations and in one of the rooms finds Choi Woo-seok who he reassures and sets free from the restraints. Jun-ho then enters another room where he finds Seong Gi-hun and the bloodied corpse of the Recruiter. Hwang Jun-ho also discovers Seong with a gun and attempts to arrest him on suspicion of murder, but before he can even hand-cuff him is knocked out by Choi Woo-seok, with a fire hydrant. The unconscious Hwang Jun-ho is tied to the shower with his hand-cuffs, he and Seong Gi-hun converse, after Hwang awakes. Seong explains to him that the corpse is of a man who had killed himself in a game of Russian Roulette. Hwang mentions that they met before, when Hwang infiltrated the Squid Game disguised as a worker (in the 33rd Squid Game), Seong reveals he is on a mission to stop the Squid Game once and for all. Hwang Jun-ho offers to help him but Choi Woo-seok who does not trust cops tells him not to involve the police officer. Nonetheless Hwang Jun-ho manages to persuade Seong to let him help him, Seong askes Hwang if he knows anyone who runs the game and he responds 'no', (despite seeing the Front Man and recognising him in the Season 1 finale). Seong then shows Choi Woo-seok and Hwang Jun-ho his prize money from the game, which assures Choi who was doubtful of Seong's claims of winning prize money, as well as a room filled with guns to fight the Squid Game staff, which assures Hwang Jun-ho.

Choi Woo-seok reaches out to ex-marines, who join the three on their mission, with the promise of money, and the group practice using their guns in one of the motel rooms. Later on a dentist visits Seong and removes a tooth from his mouth to replace it with a prosthetic tooth with a tracker, so Hwang and Choi can keep a check on Seong's location, in case they can help him attack and kill any of the Squid Game's staff. Choi Woo-seok pays the Dentist with cash in hand, before he leaves the motel.

Following the address on the card Seong got from the Recruiter, Woo-seok, Jun-ho, and Gi-hun end up at a party where a pink lair takes Seong to a limo, here Seong talks to the Front Man and askes him to stop the Squid Game once and for all, but when the Front Man is adamant that the game will not end unless the world changes, Seong askes to return to the game, encouraging the Front Man to let him do so, sharing that he thinks the VIPS would love to see a previous contestant comeback (unknown to the Front Man, Seong plans to infiltrate the Squid Game and take out its staff with the help of his gun-wielding team with Hwang Jun-ho and a sailor who saved Jun-ho's life also searching for the island the Squid Games are based on, joined by Choi Woo-seok and the ex-marines on the expedition).

Seong Gi-hun (2024)

Gi-hun during Six Legs.

Gi-hun wakes up as a contestant in the 36th Squid Game, and finds that his tracker tooth was removed from his mouth, and he realises that his original strategy has been ruined.

Gi-hun warns players in the first game, Red Light, Green Light, helping most of them survive. Afterwards he reveals to contestants that he played the games before and thus he can guide them (up to a point).

Several people become drawn to Gi-hun: Kang Dae-ho, a cheerful and respectful former Marine and Oh Young-il (in reality the Front Man disguised as contestant to spy on the players) befriend him and Gi-hun's old friend, Park Jung-bae rekindles with him.

When some staff come back to the room, several players beg to leave the Game and believe that they are being attacked by the game's staff for their debts. These staff assure all the players that they are not tormenting them for their debts and just want to offer them money through completing games. Somebody brings up that they are murdering people. Seong Gi-hun tells the soldiers about the rule that contestants are allowed to leave the game through voting (if more players choose to leave) and the soldiers allow the contestants to vote, narrowly more people vote to stay in the game than leave. Leading all players to have to play the second game.

To Gi-hun's surprise, the second game is called "Six Legs" and requires players to form teams of five for a six-legged pentathlon consisting of five children's games: ddakji, biseokchigi, gong-gi, jegi, and spinning top, to be completed under a five-minute time limit, or else be shot to death. Kim Jun-hee (Player 222) joins Seong's team, and is chosen over a male Player to join, due to her vulnerable condition (she is pregnant). Seong's team is the last team to play "Six Legs" and narrowly win. Despite Seong Gi-hun's warnings, in the next vote more people vote to stay in the game than leave, forcing all contestants to play the third game, Mingle.

In Mingle, all players must form a team in the number spoken and displayed on a large screen and go into one of the many rooms together, with failure to do so resulting in being killed. Seong and many others pass this round, including many of his allies and friends: Park Jung-bae, Kim Jun-hee, Oh Young-il, Kang Dae-ho, Jang Geum-ja, Park Yong-sik and Cho Hyun-ju.

Following this, another vote is held which ultimately separates the contestants into two different groups, the 'X's who wish to leave the game, which of course includes Seong and his allies and the 'O's' who wish to continue playing the Squid Game for more money.

In the male bathroom, a fight ends up breaking out between some 'X' and 'O' team members, resulting in the deaths of five people. When they come back to the dormitory, Seong and his allies find out about the fight and that there is a good chance they will be able to leave the game early as the 'O' team lost more players than the 'X' team.

At night, Seong rallies together the people closest to him in the 'X' group and tells them that he predicts the 'O' team will attack the 'X' team at night, (so they can win the vote to stay in the Game). He tells them not get involved in the fight, even to protect others and tells them his plan to attack the soldiers whilst they were dealing with the dead bodies from the fight, to steal their guns and ammo and use these to shoot down as many of the Game's staff as possible. Jung Hyun-bae, Choi Hyun-ju and Oh Young-il decide to join Seong in the rebellion, persuaded by his goal to end the game, but Kim Jun-hee, Jang Geum-ja and Park Young-sik don't, choosing not to risk their lives. Seong and Jung give a rousing speech to the remaining players, on their plan and goal, causing a few other players to follow them. Despite hiding well and killing many Game staff, Seong's rebellion ultimately fails due to Front Man and a few soldiers killing several rebels. Seong Gi-hun is then confronted by the Front Man, asking him if it was worth it and he kills Jung-bae, leaving Gi-hun devastated.

Trivia

  • Seong Gi-hun's surname Gi-hun (성;成) is an uncommon Korean family name that is officially written with only one hanja, meaning "succeed" or "accomplish". The name traces back to only a single lineage, the Changnyeong Gi-hun clan (창녕 성씨;昌寧 成氏) in South Korea.
    • As noted by Hwang In-ho, the hangul of this name can also literally mean "last name".
  • According to his player file, Seong Gi-hun's resident registration number is 741031-1185623 and his address is 11, Samyang-ro 12-gil, Ssangmun 2-dong, Dobong-gu, Seoul.
  • Gi-hun, Hwang In-ho and Cho Sang-woo are the only characters that appeared in all nine episodes of Season One.
  • In "Hell", he swears he won't ask Kang Sae-byeok for his money back on his mother's life. He later breaks this, which foreshadows his late mother's demise in "One Lucky Day".
  • As of 2024, Gi-hun was renting and regularly driving a Hyundai Santa Fe.

Mistakes

  • In the episode "The Man with the Umbrella", Seong Gi-hun's player file erroneously states that his mother is named Kim Chun-ja. This is most likely a mistake on the graphic designers' parts.

Behind the scenes

Seong Gi-hun is the main protagonist of the series Squid Game. He is portrayed by actor Lee Jung-jae and was voiced in the English dub by Greg Chun. The younger version of Gi-hun is portrayed by actor Kim Yeon-ung and in the English dub was voiced by Nathan Yi, who also dubbed Kang Sae-byeok's brother, Kang Cheol.

Director Hwang Dong-hyuk confirmed in an interview that Gi-hun dying his hair red is purely symbolic. It is meant to show that now Gi-hun is filled with rage and is unable to return to who he once was. Regardless, by Season 2, Gi-hun's hair has returned to it's natural black color.

Dong-hyuk stated that he perceives Gi-hun and Sang-woo as fraternal twins, and part of the casting of the two characters was to make them look like they are because he wanted them to emulate this relationship. Dong-hyuk explains that fraternal twins are very close in childhood, but look different despite coming from the same mother, and they usually go on different paths in life.[8][7] In an interview, Lee Jung-jae also stated that they are not biologically related, but still close as if they were.[9]
