Seong Gi-Hun (Lee Jung-Jae) gets fired from his job. His life is miserable. Seong Gi-Hun hears about a secret survival game, with a 45.6 billion won prize for the winner. He decides to take part in the game. Meanwhile, Cho Sang-Woo (Park Hae-Soo) is like a brother to Seong Gi-Hun and vice versa. They grew up in the same neighborhood. Despite his poor family background, Cho Sang-Woo graduated from a prestigious university and found a good job. He now faces a crisis, due to misappropriation of company funds. He decides to take part in the secret survival game with Seong Gi-Hun.

Jun 30 2025 10:38 am This season was good, but not my favorite one. I liked Jiyeong and I wish we could see more of her and her story. Saebyeok was also one of my fav characters. The VIPs are annoying, disgusting and their accent sounds so forced. I knew there were a bathroom scene but damn it was worse than I thought. Overall a good season but I wished that Gihun and his daughter would reunited.

Dec 21 2022 1:03 am a decent drama that has a predictable plot, I can't understand why Korean drama has become like western drama since it includes sex scenes I don't like, and the idea of incest and VIPs is so cringed, the gameplay is still good though.

I've watched other show like battle royal and alice borderland. korean acting is way better than japanese actor. korean can sing, dance and act they are multi talended some of them are korean idols that became actors.

A hard story but beyond the extreme violence of these games, it is a multitude of intimate stories, we follow the deadly path of these people who see in each participant an obstacle to its survival. A very controlled realization, and excellent casting.

May 01 2022 3:09 pm If you've never watched the likes of Battle Royale before, you'd understandably be wowed, horrified, etc. by this series. If you have watched such programs before, then you'll probably find Squid Game's all right but not worth the hype.
I'm in the latter camp.

Just finished the series. I would like to see a second season. I am a USA watcher who has watched tons of Korean, Chinese, Thai, Japanese series on Netflix and recognize the actors. I watch very little American made movies. Keep up the good work. Nov 13 2021 11:31 pm I just finished watching squid game. Wow it was really amazing. The plot storyline is really impressive. Squid game shows us how money ruin people in modern days.Squid game really shows how the povertystricken people are trying to make a living while people with more power and money trying to hurt the powerless people. I think squid game is not just about a game but a lesson about the difficulty of hard living. In fact the screenwriting of the story is excellent with a lot of coherence and clarity. Apart from the story the acting was superb. All the actors who played as players of the game act very naturally. Specially Lee jung jae(seong gi hun), park hae soo (cho sang woo), and the actor who act as the player one the old man Oh young soo's acting was superb. I saw many rising actors faces here. I saw Wi ha joon,Jang ho yeon for the first time here and I hope they will act more in future dramas. Anyway I really enjoyed watching this series. I hope season 2 will come soon!!! Really recommend this for all who like this kind of thriller series with heartbreaking scenes for a certain level!!!

Oct 11 2021 9:29 pm (SPOILERS)@daniela S. The same thing has been bothering me (death count from marble game). 40 completed tug of war. Dr. Dies, leaving 39 players. One woman is left out, leaving 38 players for marbles, or 19 teams of two. I thought 19 should have completed the marble game, then add the woman who didnt have a partner, so 20 should have been in the dorm the night before the bridge game, but the show said it was 17. Then the husband commits suicide. Bringing the show total to 16, but by yours (daniela's) and my count, should have been 19. I thought maybe 3 teams didnt complete the marble game in time, but i havent found any evidence of this, which is strange from a show that was typically so meticulous with it's accounting. After red light green light everyone who ran out of time was shown to be shot with automatic weapons. After honeycomb everyone who ran out of time was shown to be shot with automatic weapons. Tug of war had no time limit. After bridge, everyone who ran out of time would theoretically have fallen to their deaths. In marbles, when the timer goes off, there is no flurry of automatic gunfire, there is no long list of players eliminated, there is only a singular shot and the lone players number read as eliminated. Given the attention to detail in this show, it seems hard to believe that 3 teams didnt finish the game in time and were executed without being shown struggling, begging or pleading at some point between scenes. I went back and tried to account for all the deaths in that game. By my count, 15 player numbers were read out as eliminated (414,2,130,40,68,229,278,43,85,276,158,70,199,240,1), i could see 2 bodies on the ground whose numbers werent announced (005,183), and 1 more that i didnt hear or see, but is clearly dead (wife, 070). That accounts for 18 deaths, not the seemingly logical 19 or the strangely depicted 23. If anyone reads this whole thing and has an answer, i'd love to hear it. My wife asked her friends if they could account for the apparent discrepancy and was told "they didnt finish in time, so they died" and "korean shows are inconsistent like that". I find both those answers to be lacking in the context of the rest of this show.

That money can be used for his mom's surgery :( that girl is just a no, apart from that she even has the audacity to ask ki hun not to ask the money anymore, which ends up him swearing on his mom's life

It's like a Fusion Of Two Stephen King's Old Novels : The Long Walk (1979) and the Running Man (1982, even filmed at 1987. starring Arnold Schwarzenegger). Have same premise : 1. Poor people took part on the game willingly (include willing to kill each other) for money 2. Similar characters background (drown in debt or to cure illness of family member) 3. Same games rule which the losers have to die and game won't stop until remain 1 sole survivor and 4. The fact when turn out the game host is a family of one 'participant'
Hell, even similar poster design to the Long Walk. I knew who behind the mask since the first time he spoke, especially when he spoke in English because i remember clearly how the actor sounds. Nothing mind-blowing here, unless You don't read (or watch) much. Definitely overhyped.

40 players survived the tug of war. Since dr died, they are left with 39. Si, 38 would play. If 1 from each pair lives, 19 would remain. Then add the 1 who didn't have a partner and deduct 1 again. The number of players for the glass tile game should be 19 not 16 huhuhu
Maybe I'll just cry myself to sleep for lost 3 souls.
Nevertheless, this kdrama is a masterpiece! Looking forward for the 2nd season. ?

Can't say it's the most original, many TV plots are recycled and there is not much room for new ideas. Actually a little predictable. Reminiscent of Liars Game. But the side characters make the show better. Too bad they all had to die though.
Set up for season 2.
Kudos to Netflix. They are funding alot of new dramas and quality due to the increased budget shows in the quality. This really raises the profile of Korean dramas.

Oct 04 2021 3:13 am to people who claim that this kseries is over and artificial hype. oh well, sorry to say, in india it is Top 1, and almost all my friends, family and people i know watched this series and talk about.. more of positive review. i also enjoyed it, the story are easy to understand and have mind blowing hidden hints so cleverly by writers and director. there are many awesome contents and this one also was really good one. so people stop comparing and love any good movies and watch them all.

I am reposting someone's amazing theories which really blows my mind.When you rewatched Squid Game and you will realized that their deaths and how they were eliminated in the game were already foreshadowed in Episode 2: Hell.
Spoiler alert:
- Deok-su jumped off the bridge in episode 2. He was eliminated in the game by falling off the bridge.
- Ali took the money from his boss. He was eliminated when someone took the marbles from him.
- Sae-byeok threatened someone with a knife on their throat. She was eliminated when someone stabbed her on her neck.
- Sang-woo tried to kill himself in episode 2. He was eliminated in the game when he killed himself.
- Gi-hun swore on his mother's life. His mother died in the end.

I love this show, I've rewatched it three times since I keep noticing more intricate details every time I watch! I love the story line, especially seeing the socioeconomic factors playing a role as to why people are how they are. It was great and each game made me try to figure out different ways to play whilst seeing the way the characters handled the games.
It doesn't get a full 10.0/10.0 since it leaves a few questions or some parts made me question what was actually happening, I'm disappointed with the translations from Netflix tho since they're interpretation doesn't really get the whole characters view across. Hoping for a season 2, I have a lot more to add but I'll leave this review here. P.S. I think they should hire better English Speaking Actors for the VIPs, it was a little cringe.

The least he could’ve done was honor the deaths of his friends decently. I don’t understand the point of the vendetta when you already KNOW who created the game. You barely survived the game once what the heck are you going to do in there a second time? WTF. Rubbish ending. Total rubbish ending.
Ugh this one is simply horrid. For no damn reason. If you want to feed your unhealthy and limiting beliefs about money, watch this and have fun. But if you ever hope to feel good about money stay away from this one.
Oh it was horrid. I need to go rewatch the current 4 episodes of Yumi’s Cells to purge this series from my brain. Oh it was awful. Just awful. No redeeming qualities whatsoever.

I highly recommend this drama for those who didn't watch it (I'm sure you've heard so much bout it) so give it a try,, it's worth your every minute!

I look forward to this series because others highly praise it but the adrenaline from watching the gory scenes is just what makes me stay. There's so many plot holes that I could point out and that's one of the biggest contributor as to why I'm not satisfied with this series as plot holes are just my massive pet peeve. I know that there are some issues that they are trying to touch with all the back stories and the metaphor behind the games, but it just feels empty. I'm not really a fan of 'there'll be only one survivor' trope, so maybe that's the reason I'm not really digging it. Overall, I'll give it 4.5/10.
BTW, for the fifth game, about the glass tiles, does the rules include not allowed to crawl or something? Because if it does not, why would they go for the harder path and jump on the glass just based on their intuition? Couldn't they just extend their feet while sitting down on the tempered glass to crack one of the following glasses?I'm pretty sure by that way, all of them are able to survive.

@Ockanna , I would still hang on to the hope cuz if you pay very close attention to the shot , it seemed as if he got hit in the shoulder and further on since he was shocked his missing brother is basically a criminal , his face was in pure shook. I also remember several zoom ins on the very cliff edge hinting it was because of the gun's impact he lost balance and fell and not exactly death. But hey , we can have different opinions about a matter

To ppl down below: i think the the policeman died. It was not same shot. The brother got shot on right chest, while the police got shot on left which is it could be a fatal shot bc of its where heart suppose to be. Don't get too much of hope. I was being prepared when he was first shown, knowing that he was very likely would be dead in the end.

I find Squid Game interesting not just because of the plot, but because of the characters, the emotions, & the cinematic. I find it interesting how the drama plays out and builds up. Sure there are plot holes, but nonetheless, I very much enjoyed it because it gave me suspense and bitter-sweet heartbreaks. Recommended if you're in for some dark and thriller vibe!!

This story will all question our beliefs,values and principles.

Sep 21 2021 6:41 am Thanks for the comments that said this series is just a rip-off or copying Alice in Borderland concept, because I started watching this series with very low expectation and presumed that it'll be the same as that other series. But the more I watched the more I became confused, because it is Totally different from that series. That other series brings Arisu and friends to another place/dimension where people are gone other than them. But in this series, they are taken to one place with their own consideration. And about the survival game as the theme in this series, that doesn't mean all the series with that theme are copying Alice in Borderland concept, because Waaayyy Before Alice in Wonderland there were tons of movies and series with this concept such as Kaiji, The Hunt, Ready or Not, Battle Royale, As The Gods Will, Hunger Games, The Belko Experiment, Escape Room, Money Game (Webtoon), etc.. Go watch them if you don't believe that Alice in Borderland wasn't the first.
And about this drama, I really enjoy it. This is beyond my expectation (maybe because I expect nothing good about this series at the beginning).

AND its sad how the police tried to find his brother and just to found out his brother is the front man :(. it's a great drama but no season 2 needed, it's enough.

The police role is not really necessary, doesn't give much impact (or can say no impact at all) to the storyline - unless they are planning for extended season to expand this part. The whole series should have just focus on games and participants to suit the title.

Feels like a good setup for a season 2 cuz there are still things that could be either or. Cop dying (or surviving) is one of those. Gi Hun’s new determination and power over his own life is another. The games continuing is a great setup for another season. Etc.
I enjoyed the series overall. The gore was nowhere near as sadistic as Saw, but some parts did surprise me (like the squished/blasted fingers and the vagina stuff...). The games were a bit eerie, but not too bad either. I was most impressed with tug of war though. As much as I like to strategize (like in Liar’s Game), I never would have guessed tug of war’s simple winning strategies. A lot of the plot I had guessed early on, like guessing there’d be an inside man within the group as big as 456 to move the action in a certain direction (there’s always one of those), and that the inside man being 001, and that 001 would be the mastermind lol. Two choices came to mind, but as the series went on, 001 was the most plausible. The other guess was Han Mi Nyeo (I forget her number), but turns out she’s just naturally funky and suspicious.
I gotta admit I missed a lot of the symbolisms and messages of this series. Like the color red and green, inherent selfishness vs good and stuff like that. All I got was, “the desperate makes poor choices.” While some of their situations couldn’t be helped, like Ali’s and the tall NKorean girl, others were poor choices made by cutting corners and greed (the two main characters). Either way, they were all desperate, and made the one poor choice after another where they wouldn’t have made otherwise if they weren’t desperate. But the red green symbolism thing... after reading a review, I understand better the red hair in the end. Lol

Sep 20 2021 5:16 am {SPOILER} to all the people who is some what disappointed with the way, we think the policeman is killed. but i don't think he died. he will comeback in next season for sure. just think rationally.. in the game, people who lose are killed by instant killing of gunshot at head. some people who got shots on body are shot again to die. as for the police he was shot at his shoulder once .. so, i think his brother wanted to safe him from this mess up. may be someone else who is more powerful are controlling and its dangerous for policeman to do deeper. we will know more in next season for sure about why his brother works there and who is running this? if its Korean drama and it must have at least 16 ep .. so 9 eps are already here .. so the remaining 7 will come according to the viewer response to this serial.
umms.. something to talk about translator works on english subtitles. i watched kdrama so many times that i can understand some of it. english subtitle and the way korean speak in this drama is quite different. the main meaning may be same but it lose some touch of way the korean scripts are written. ... i have many things to point out in translater but only one thing i remember clearly now.. when night killing starts. ali and cho sang woo was night guard. cho sang woo told ali to call him hyung which is brother.. but the translater written the specific name of character. people who know little korean may misunderstand that hyung work is a person name. Just saying.

I binged it all in one evening and let me tell you, it's pure gold. The actors and actresses did such a great job, and the plot is super well written. Even though the end somewhat shocked me and I was a bit upset, I understand why it ended that way. I can't wait for season 2!! Also, I really loved how well-written Park Hae-soo's character is... he did such a great job portraying him too!

I know some people said it's a copycat of survival series (Alice in Borderland, Hunger Games, Money Heist, etc), but Squid Game is more than that. It depicts the dark reality of injustice economic that made the poors have to risk their own life while the rich made fun of them. IMO, Squid Game is more related to our life than other series. It questions our belief of humanity, relationship, and life. It deeply made a hole in my heart, made my brain thinks all the day.
Highly recommended!

But when Korea made such a survival series you'll know. They make the story more "soft" than any other Western series I've had a watch. It's not cruel or violent, such as Game of thrones?. The story had a "soft" one and then when you watch it. You will remember this is a Korean drama. But I loved it. The acting is very natural, the cameo is top stars, and they build this setting on the game are very incredible.
