ekam01 E Hey guys, I have a 54 Plate 1.6 FSI, with the dodgy nox sensor, I've had the car a year now and its only just started to play up, I've known about the nox sensor for a while as the engine light has been on but it lost alot of power about 4 weeks ago , its really bugging me and it stutters and jerks slightly but noticeably throughout the rev range mainly in 2nd and 3rd and 4th gear and rarely in 1st. However i had a diagnostics done to see why the car was jerking and all seemed fine, they did a test run to collect data etc and all looked well, the spark plugs were checked etc. Then they said it was most likely the nox sensor with the fault "signal too low" which has been there for a while now. I had my car decatted for a few months because the old cat had broken but now i have replaced it with a cat from euro car parts and this problem seemed to occur about a month after the new cat was put in. anyway i had the light cleared and was told that that it would run fine if i didn't want to replace the sensor. its been about 200 miles since and the light hasn't come back but there is still a huge power loss, i know its a relatively slow car to start with at 115bhp but its just not fun to drive anymore :( so basically im thinking of forking out for a new sensor and software upgrade which i was told by my local VW specialist that would fix the problem and that the ecu upgrade that comes with it is like a "mini remap" and should restore the power and add more, but i am a bit skeptical about this power gain as he could just be trying to persuade me to get it. Anyway the light hasn't come back on yet and now I'm wondering if it is the nox sensor that's causing this power loss and i cant exactly sell it on because as soon as anyone test drives it they are going to know straight away. also I've had the light cleared about 3 times when getting serviced or disconnecting the batter and the light always does come back on so I'm guessing it will come back on soon. Sorry for the long post but i really want to sort this problem out, any idea on what i should do guys? Any help would be hugely appreciated. Thank you *also ive seen brand new sensors on ebay for a fraction of the £400 vw charge for this part such as: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Denso-Lambda-O2-Oxygen-Sensor-VW-Golf-1-6-FSI-QF17645-/290844677030?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&fits=Plat_Gen%3AMK+V&hash=item43b7b193a6 are these an option? or am i best sticking to the genuine part which also includes the ecu update. #1 · Apr 4, 2013 Hey guys, I have a 54 Plate 1.6 FSI, with the dodgy nox sensor, I've had the car a year now and its only just started to play up, I've known about the nox sensor for a while as the engine light has been on but it lost alot of power about 4 weeks ago , its really bugging me and it stutters and jerks slightly but noticeably throughout the rev range mainly in 2nd and 3rd and 4th gear and rarely in 1st. It might have been disturbed/damaged when the cat was changed. Also, is it the pre, or post cat lambda sensor? the post cat sensor doesn't usually make that much difference power wise, as it's more for monitoring the catalytic converters performance. The pre cat sensor is used to directly influence fuelling. If you have to buy a new sensor, get a Bosch one from ECP and use the UKMK425 code for 25% off Image #3 · Apr 4, 2013 i cant seem to get access to the sensor, but this problems been around since well before the replacement cat was put in, i believe its the pre cat lambda sensor, they say its the nox (nitrogen oxide sensor) but the one on ECP is the oxygen sensor are these essentially the same thing? http://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/c/Volkswagen_Golf_1.6_2004/p/car-parts/car-body-parts-and-car-exhaust/exhausts/lambda-sensor/?710443565&1&80bd7be37f83c0f48a062b1bd8eaf96245e7918f&000210 If i were to buy this sensor, would i need the ecu upgrade aswell? if so where could i get it and if you were in my situation, what would you go about doing? thanks #4 · Apr 4, 2013 Lambda, nox, oxygen sensor, call it whatever you like, they're the same thing. what does the fault code say? if its bank 1 sensor 1, it's pre cat, if it's bank 1 sensor 2, it's post cat. If it was me, i would check the wires for damage, then use VCDS to map live data from the sensor, if it wasn't performing as expected, I'd replace it with a Bosch item. Or you could go old school, and use a multimeter/oscilloscope to measure the sensor output voltage. No, there's no need to touch the ECU software, VW were probably just pointing out you have an outdated ECU map, and a newer one is available, it wont fix a faulty lambda sensor, and not a necessity. #5 · Apr 4, 2013 Ah ok, well the sheet they gave me back is as follows: 3 Faults Found: 17441 - Sensor for NOx (G295) p1033 - 002 - Signal too low MIL on 17443 - Sensor for NOx (G295) p1035 - 088 - Signal Implausible 17480 - NOx Sensor (G295) Heater Control p1072 - 008 - Circuit Malfunction Readiness: 0000 0001 i haven't been to VW about this i have been to my local Independant VW specialist. Also the engine lights just come back on today. #6 · Apr 4, 2013 Sounds like a dead sensor to me Image #7 · Apr 4, 2013 haha glad to get something confirmed finally thank you :) would you be able to tell me which is the correct sensor to buy? Theres so many listed for my car. Thank you so much for your help hopefully i can restore my car to its full power and enjoy driving again haha! Insert Quotes Post Reply
