bpb1970 B Hello, My '13 XC60 T6 recently started making a whining noise from the engine area when accelerating. It goes away when coasting or decelerating. It also does not seem to happen at higher speeds but that may be because wind noise is drowning it out. Any idea or experience with this issue? Thanks in advance! #1 · Jun 15, 2020 Hello, My '13 XC60 T6 recently started making a whining noise from the engine area when accelerating. It goes away when coasting or decelerating. Not saying it can’t be in the OP’s case though, they each sound different. :) Joe #4 · Jun 16, 2020 Definitely not turbo whine. It's something else that just started after the last oil change around 1K miles ago. I'll probably have to pay to have someone look at it. Google says whining can be transmission which I seriously hope is not the case. It could be something with the drive belt (not time chain) or alternator. The alternator was replaced about 15K miles ago with an aftermarket version. #5 · Jun 16, 2020 Most alternators last longer than 15k miles. But with Volvo's there are just some things that you are better off just buying Volvo Genuine parts for reliability and longivity. 0 Reply #6 · Jun 16, 2020 Without hearing it I'd say a pulley, hopefully not the alternator you just did though quality in aftermarket parts is a bit lacking sometimes. #10 · Jul 7, 2020 UPDATE: Wayne T5 was very close! It ended up being the tensioner. I bought the drive belt kit from Rockauto (belt, tensioner, and pulley) and had all three components replaced by a local mechanic and the noise is gone! He showed me the tensioner and the best way to describe it is a wobble where the outside part of tensioner connects to the inner piece. Thanks for all the replies! https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php?pk=9118648&cc=1505581&jsn=2158 0 Reply #7 · Jun 18, 2020 Try toggling the AC off and see if it still happens. My 2010 xc60 T6 whines when the AC is on, but not at all when it's off. #8 · Jun 20, 2020 Agreed on trying this. My V60 does the exact same thing. I think this generation of Volvos have noisy AC compressors. My XC60 even got the update from Volvo to correct it, but it still makes a lot of noise. As far as I can tell, this is extremely common. 0 Reply #9 · Jun 20, 2020 Angle gear fluid and seals might be worth a check. Differentials tend to whine when low on fluid Insert Quotes Post Reply
