X5 3.0i vs. 4.4i vs 4.8i

Just wanted some quick personal opinions of reliability and maintenance on a 2005/2006 low mile X5 3.0i vs. 4.4i vs. 4.8is. Besides the cost of 8cyl vs 6cyl and mpg. I value the opinions of the forum before any paid write up. My soon to be fiancee loves the X5 and wants all the options of the uber loaded 4.4 or 4.8. I will admit that I lust over an Imola Red 4.8is......so, we are on the hunt for a low mileage one that is not overpriced. I just saw a 2006 black over tan 4.8is w/ 15k miles go on autotrader for $27k. Thanks, Graham Top cgraff Posts: 1387 Joined: Feb 12, 2006 12:00 PM Location: New Jersey Contact: Contact cgraff Website

The last models of the E53 are great cars. Many of the early bugs have been worked out on. I won't discuss the V8 vs. I-6, since this has been discussed ad nauseum, and you can search for it on this board. Low miles is the way to go, and try to get it with CPO (I know there's only 1-2 years left, but it's good insurance). http://www.mye28.com/viewtopic.php?t=73 ... hlight=e53 http://www.mye28.com/viewtopic.php?t=71 ... hlight=e53 http://www.mye28.com/viewtopic.php?t=67 ... hlight=e53 These are a few good first links. I'm sure others can highlight their posts as well. -Chris Top m-racer Posts: 5274 Joined: Feb 12, 2006 12:00 PM Location: Tampa Bay Florida

I have an 02 4.6is (Silver/Imola leather) that I am going to be putting up for sale in a few weeks. It is not low mileage (has about 100k), but the heavy lifting (cooling system, cv boots, bushings, brakes, tires etc.) has already been done and the car (I am the original owner) has gotten old school maintenance since new (including the tranny and diff, which most people ignore). It has some minor wear and tear, but is in really nice shape. Bimmer just included the 4.6is in their "the most fun to drive" article in the last issue. It's a hoot to drive (Alpina did a great job with this engine, as you might imagine). A 4.6is may or may not fit your needs. Just thought I would mention it as with all of my cars, I have spent a lot of money on it, and would like to see it go to an enthusiast. Whatever you buy, make sure it has been well maintained. Good luck. Top turbodan Posts: 9204 Joined: Jan 09, 2007 10:19 PM

Beware of the air suspension equipped models. I think all 4.8is' have it, and some 4.4/3.0 models had it too. Its either a punctured bladder on one of the struts or problems with the air supply system. Its always something. Despite that the 4.8 does have some advantages. Its the newer N62 engine, which does away with the plastic intake manifold and its leaky profile gaskets. The crankcase vent valves are a revised, much improved design. The N62 still has a valley pan though, which is going to need to be done at some point down the road. Top Snakeyestx Posts: 2168 Joined: Jul 27, 2009 12:43 PM Location: Houston, TX

+1 to the V8 crowd. The X5 is a lot of weight to push around. The 3-liter, while a great engine in an E46, is just a bit underpowered in an X5. I've driven both for about a week at a time and the V8's milage was actually better overall with stop and go commuting. Even cruising the on the interstate for long periods of time, the V8's overall MPG was negligibly lower than the 3-liter. It's simply a matter of a small engine having to push around a lot of weight. Ask anyone with an E34 525 how shocking the em-pee-geez are. Mine averaged 14.9 mpg, where my 540/6 gets 18mpg consistantly. M20 motor? I've seen M50-powered E34 525s return 28-30 mpg highway and 18-22 mpg in town. My M30-powered E34 is relatively abysmal at 14/23 (about the same as I managed with my E28 M5). Best tank on that car so far was 26 mpg, but that was a much lighter-footed friend driving on the interstate. -tammer Top pldlnr Posts: 2221 Joined: Sep 18, 2007 5:45 PM Location: Seattle Contact: Contact pldlnr Website

X2 My 525i averaged around 28 on the freeway and around 21 in town. My 525iT gets about 26-27 on the freeway and about 19 in town. You must have had some issues with that 525i to be getting 14mpg. Top Snakeyestx Posts: 2168 Joined: Jul 27, 2009 12:43 PM Location: Houston, TX

I had an 95 model M50 one, but my commute was laden with red lights and stop signs. On the freeway it was decent, high 20's, but the majority of city-dwellers run into similar commutes like mine (or forced into them with traffic in large cities). We make mucho dinero repairing oil leaks on 4.4/4.8 motors. Typical reseal of the front chain cover, valve cover gaskets, oil pan, alternator (as equipped) coupled to various vacuum, vent tubes & valves generally returns $3500.00 +/- a few for the repairs. We really do not see alot of air bag problems although we change a few which is a quick money maker as well. My choice would be the 3.0 based on the these facts: 1. Plenty of power. 2. Maintence/cost 3. Lighter feel when driving They are decent SUV's at any rate. Top dragonbar Posts: 391 Joined: Feb 17, 2010 10:22 AM Location: Houston, Tx

We had a 2000 4.4. My wife loved that car. At about 125k we had to replace a cracked radiator, and went through at least two expansion tanks (they would split at the seam). The engine itself was great, no complaints. I think we averaged about 14.5 in town and around 17 on the road. For what it was we couldn't complain. Her biggest complaint was the fact that a child's car seat was a really tight fit and required us to move the seat forward, a lot, to fit it comfortably. Top Mike W.   Don't take this as a slam at your prices, because it's not, I don't have a clue how much work it is or isn't. But $3500 to fix oil leaks? Do they leak like the Exxon Valdez or just kind of mark their spot beforehand? Top RonP Posts: 3581 Joined: Feb 12, 2006 12:00 PM Location: Sunset Beach, California Contact: Contact RonP Website

I am with Tim here, we had a 2003 4.6is and it was a kick in the pants to drive. We never had any problems what so ever. My only complaint was the cost of the tires. They came stock with Michelin Diamaris, we then switched to Toyo and after 5k miles they were so loud, you had to listen to the radio. Switched back to Michelin and were happy thereafter. Ours had 62k on it when we sold it, but I would give it two thumbs up. Top Post Reply
