…and how/when people use them vs. kudos.

Sometimes if I love a one-shot enough, I’ll subscribe just on the slim, slim chance it could one day for some reason get an update…more like as a sign of love, I guess?

Aww, that’s lovely. :) Is there any situation when you would do this but not leave kudos?

sometimes I subscribe by accident to stories that are complete. usually I mean to subscribe either to the series or the author, but I hit the wrong button and don’t realize for months.

Oof, yeah, I’ve done that! :P Do you always leave kudos if you’re subscribing?

Is a story subscription different from an author one? I forget to unsubscribe when people hop fandoms. Also I’m terrible at leaving kudos if reading on kindle or from downloads.

I don’t believe author subscriptions are counted in the story subscription count, but I’m not actually sure! @zz9pzza @samjohnssonvt any insights?

As @chriscalledmesweetie points out, these are separate forms of subscriptions, and author subscriptions don’t count toward individual stories (though subscribers will get notified of all stories).

I didn’t know how subscriptions worked when I first started using AO3. It could be novice users not understanding the features.

Good point! It took me quite a while to get the hang of several features. (*hangs head in shame remembering when I created public bookmarks criticizing certain stories, before realizing that authors could see them*)
