Today I want to read a poem by Xu Zhimo (1897-1931), the talented Chinese poet, who also studied in the UK from 1920-1922 🙂 The title of the poem is 偶然 (By Chance).

It may simply be a love poem to the one met by chance, but it can also be more. It can be a sigh of life. There too many beautiful things that only happen as luck would have it, and they may only walk into your life once and leave for good 🙂

偶然

我是天空裏的一片雲， 偶爾投影在你的波心─ 你不必訝異， 更無須歡喜─ 在轉瞬間消滅了蹤影。

你我相逢在黑夜的海上， 你有你的，我有我的，方向； 你記得也好， 最好你忘掉， 在這交會時互放的光亮！

By Chance

I’m a flake of cloud, Occasionally cast on your heart— No need to be surprised; No need to be happy— As I’ll be out of sight in a blink of eye.

We meet on the sea in the dark night, You have your destination, and I have mine; We glow when our paths crossed and shine bright. You may wish to remember, But better you forget.
