MontegoBlue M Really have been pondering this for a while, I have a 2008 58 plate e87 74k, the timing chain issue is really getting to me, i haven't got a bmw warranty and have a second hand car warranty which wont cover such an issue, recently my car has been making that "chugging" noise up the revs, im looking on Autotrader at 2006 M Sport m47 120d's, albeit with 120K on but full bmw service history...literally on the verge of just doing a part ex for an older car, being paranoid is a bad thing, but wont beable to to have the funds to fix or replace such a problem like this on my e87!! Are the M47s as bomb proof as ive read in comparison to the n47...and would this make me feel better ha! #1 · Jul 12, 2013 Really have been pondering this for a while, I have a 2008 58 plate e87 74k, the timing chain issue is really getting to me, i haven't got a bmw warranty and have a second hand car warranty which wont cover such an issue, recently my car has been making that "chugging" noise up the revs, im looking on Autotrader at 2006 M Sport m47 120d's, albeit with 120K on but full bmw service history...literally on the verge of just doing a part ex for an older car, being paranoid is a bad thing, but wont beable to to have the funds to fix or replace such a problem like this on my e87!! Sort by Oldest first Oldest first Newest first Most reactions #2 · Jul 12, 2013 It would certainly ease your concerns. Any car can develop faults regardless of what part it is. I'm sure there'll be some 120d's around 70k miles on pistonheads/autotrader with similar value to yours. I traded mine in at 60k miles so it could be sitting in a forecourt somewhere! #3 · Jul 12, 2013 We've never had an M47 engine with chain problems, or any other known expensive problems. The trouble with going very high mileage is the ancillaries will be getting old, turbos, alternators, etc, so doesn't guarantee no bills/problems. Mine's a nice example. Oil always changed early, 80k, and spends it life pottering up and the motorways of the South East. Not for sale currently though (probably in the spring), but there are loved cars out there. #4 · Jul 12, 2013 Yeah i know other parts will eventually fail, but timing chain seems a ridiculous thing to have to replace, first bmw ownership and no that happy with my car, and the possible time bomb! But dont want to open yet another thread about this issue again :lol2: jeees ive even been looking at Toyota Avensis, I since replaced my 55 plate avensis with this 1series, somehow regretting that day tbh, loved that car, so well built the japs and easy to fix if things break! Decisions decisions #5 · Jul 12, 2013 Everything your car is but 2 years older and 50k less miles... http://www.pistonheads.com/classifi...lassifieds/used-cars/bmw/1-series/1-series-diesel-hatchback-118d-se-5dr/1490445 #6 · Jul 12, 2013 what about this? http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classif.../onesearchad/used/keywords/m sport/radius/1500/page/2/postcode/wa68ap?logcode=p" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; #7 · Jul 12, 2013 I chose another SE version to save your spine from injury :lol2: the ride is very firm in the M Sport unless you get rid of runcraps straight away.. #8 · Jul 12, 2013 Have you actually had your engine checked out? It could be OK, or something relatively minor. #9 · Jul 12, 2013 Yeah heard m sport is hard so would change to non runflats, got space-saver on my e87 at mo running normals, no ive not got it checked out as such just looked on videos on youtube to diagnose sound, i wanted to keep this car for a long time but the whole timing chain issue would not make sense to me..always back of my mind or any slight noise, its a right pain!, thats why I'm thinking for older m47 version pay little more on tax etc, i can budget for turbos and clutches but timing chains are a different kind of repair that im not willing to shell out for...until BMW recognise the issue and recall but thats never going to happen, this one ive posted going to view tomorrow and try and p/x if all is good, always get RAC inspection on all cars before i buy anyway, never buy blind. #10 · Jul 12, 2013

ha! It does look like a well looked after example though dont you think? #11 · Jul 12, 2013 If mine went pop and I didn't want it fixed (it is covered by warranty, though), I would be looking at just changing the engine, not the whole car. Not to an M47 though - N57 maybe. :cool2: #12 · Jul 12, 2013 M57? :) #13 · Jul 12, 2013

No, N57 (3 litre 6-pot diesel) as suggested by Peter - with matching manual box and transmission. He's looking for another project once he's completed installing my CIC pro-nav system. Maybe in a few year's time. :) #14 · Jul 12, 2013 Yeah think I am being abit radical by changing whole car, if it goes bang it goes bang, think bit risky to swap to an older car, when dont know where its been etc, thanks Marco for you help on what to check, but think its a another big risk probably!
