CJ_TDI C Driving to work this morning and engine momentarily lost power followed by "Engine Fault - Workshop!" on the dash. The engine continued to run ok but the glow plug light was flashing continuously. Stopped the engine, cycled the ignition and the warning was still there on the dash. Engine restarted ok and ran without any obvious problems. Glow plug light was still flashing. Connected VCDS and read the fault codes. Address 01: Engine Labels: 03G-906-016-BKD.lbl Part No SW: 03G 906 016 FM HW: 028 101 190 3 Component: R4 2,0L EDC G000SG 7287 Revision: 12345678 Serial number: VWZ7Z0E2031181 Coding: 0000072 Shop #: WSC 66565 257 00032 1 Fault Found: 16706 - Engine Speed Sensor (G28): No Signal P0322 - 000 - - Freeze Frame: RPM: 2226 /min Torque: 100.0 Nm Speed: 118.0 km/h Load: 29.0 % Voltage: 14.21 V Bin. Bits: 00001000 Idle Stabilization: 0.0°KW RPM: 1092 /min Readiness: 0 0 0 0 0 Cleared the codes and the warning went away, engine starts as normal, no problems. Drive for a few miles (approx10) and then the same thing happens again. Momentary loss of power followed by warning, but normal engine running. I assume the crank sensor is either faulty or the harness to it has a problem. I guess another sensor is used after the fault is detected to allow the engine to continue running? Are there any known common failures for this on the BKD diesel? How much is a crank sensor and how easy is it to replace on this engine? Anyone care to comment on whether the symptoms indciate a harness failure or sensor? They obviously do otherwise bruceythebrucedude wouldnt have said anything! #7 · Apr 30, 2009 Back in the real world, has anyone anything specific relating to my problem? [whistle] Thanks for the link, but I am well familiar with the wiki, unfortunately for me. CJ #8 · Apr 30, 2009 The Diesel Direct Fuel Injection Engine Control Module J248 uses the signal from the G40 and G28. theoretically on the 1.9tdi unit the engine shouldnt work with the G28 disconnected, but the J248 control module might use the signal from the G40 solo. #9 · Apr 30, 2009 Have you checked the wiring to it? Thats the first job. If wiring is ok after being tested it might be a case of a new G28 #10 · Apr 30, 2009 A new one of these {03G 906 016 FM} which i think the fault is pertaining to is a very expensive part ~800quid! #11 · Apr 30, 2009 Thats for the entire ecu richwig. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VW-VOLKSWAGEN-TOURAN-BKD-TDI-ENGINE-ECU-03G-906-016-BQ_W0QQitemZ220307181022QQihZ012QQcategoryZ9889QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp1713.m153.l1262 #12 · May 8, 2009 Just to complete this thread, for the archive. The document hosted here is useful for background on the 2.0TDI engine. The sensor is a complete bitch to get access to (once you know roughly where it is supposed to be). I checked the harness from the sensor back to the ECU and it all appeared fine. After scrabbling around on the floor to gain accesss to the actual sensor I decided to give in and pay a garage to replace it for me. Without removing oil coolers and such I could not even get my hand to the connector! When attempting to drive to the garage the sensor failed in a more complete fashion and would only give P0321 - Implausible signal from the ESS on every crank. The engine would still eventually start (30 secs cranking) with a bit of throttle and once running it was ok (limited revs). Garage replaced the sensor. £44 for the sensor and over 1 hour labour. Everything is fine now. CJ #13 · May 9, 2009 Glad you got it sorted in the end mate #14 · May 14, 2009 i had my car scanned when my speedo stopped working also when i turn corners my fule needle drops below empty giving me the fule warning light. the scan shown engine speed sensor . when i went to vw to pick up a new one they had got me what looked like the wiring harness with three plugs on it. chris who scanned it ( top geezer ) showed me where it was. it bolts to the engine case,< 22mm socket to remove> with 2 pins on the top witch the wireing connects to.is the fule needle isue connected speedo problem???????? 1.4 16v #15 · May 14, 2009 I wouldnt think so mate. #16 · Nov 4, 2010 Good day CJ and all WV TDI members, For the last 6 month I had this G28 problem and it is impossible that the sensor is defective under normal conditions, so: The problem was a moisture in the wiring, and the solution is a bypass wire from the sensor's output to the computer controller input. More details: The sensor is a serial sensor, that is, it only receives 5vdc and swithes it (simple explenation wise) back to the ECU (electronic control unit). The problem in this signal is that it is of hi impidence so it is sensitive to outside effects, ie, a moisture with dirt that can conduct the 5vdc between the wires, giving the ECU a hard time trying to discriminate the signal from the voltage leakage. In order to overcome the problem, simply locate the output wire, Purple wire in Passat 2.0TDI 2007, locate the same wire in the ECU connector (J248 in this car) , located in the wipers section, under the front windshield window, cut it there too, and connect a new wire to by pass the original. If you explain to me how to add files like pictures and PDF, I'll add more information. Good luck, and try to avoid purchasing sensores, they don't go bad unless you ecceed their voltage ot temperature ranges. All the best, Avraham #18 · Aug 17, 2021 0 Reply #17 · Nov 8, 2010 Good day all, In some models, the way to get to the G28 sensor is via the starter housing, just remove the starter and it is accessible, All the best, Avi #19 · Aug 17, 2021 Can you send me some pictures to see how u solve this ? #20 · Aug 17, 2021 That was almost 11 years ago, and they have not been active since. I feel like you may not get a response... 0 Reply Insert Quotes Post Reply
