UKAPCE Chinese Calligraphy Competition
Có thể bạn quan tâm
My entry for the UKAPCE Chinese calligraphy competition is finally finished. I wrote a poem by Wang Zhi Huan (王之渙), a Tang dynasty poet, entitled “On Stork Tower” (登鸛雀樓). It is a famous poem in China:
白日依山盡 bái rì yī shān jìn
黃河入海流 huáng hé rù hǎi liú
欲窮千里目 yù qióng qiān lǐ mù
更上一層樓 gèng shàng yì céng lóu
Various translations exist, for example:
“The white sun sets behind the mountains,
and the Yellow River flows into the sea.
To see a thousand mile view,
go up another floor.”
And:
“The sun beyond the mountains glows;
The Yellow River seawards flows.
You can enjoy a grander sight,
By climbing to a greater height.”
I wrote my own translation vertically to the right of the poem:
“Ascending Heron Tower.
The bright sun sets behind the mountains,
And the Yellow River flows to the sea.
To see for a thousand miles,
Climb higher.
Wang Zhi Huan.”
It was the product of several weeks work: getting to know the characters and the poem, and exploring different ways to write and arrange the text. I was happy enough with the final product; hopefully the judges will like it too.
UPDATE Oct 2018: I am happy to say I was awarded second place in my category.
