VW Golf 1.6 FSI
« on: September 05, 2014, 10:36:10 pm » Hi there mk5golf crew!I will be getting a Golf 1.6 FSI (2005-2007 plate, depending on which I find) soon, like real soon and well I wanted to do a couple of build changes to it (lights, exhaust, windows etc) but I want to know what you guys think I should do first and the best places to start looking for the items. I have no clue about changing things around on the car and where to look etc. I would like to know what changes you guys think I should make first. MY BUDGET TO START OFF IS AROUND £700-£1000.thanks guys!Max (a new member to the forum)

« Reply #6 on: September 06, 2014, 11:59:53 am » I was 19 with 2 years NCB when my policy started and paying £1280 a year, the year before (18 with 1 years NCB) I paid basically the same money for a 1.2 Skoda fabia with 54bhp.

It's a nippy car, a nice car for a 2nd car and cheap insurance plus looks smart and even smarter when little tweaks are done to it :)

« Reply #9 on: September 07, 2014, 03:09:55 am » The Golf 1.6 FSI is a nice starter car, definitely a lot better than the grossly underpowered 1.4 units and is generally peppy for most scenarios. I typically get around 420 miles to the tank on mine with mixed driving, much more if you're constantly cruising on the motorway.Performance wise you not going to get big gains on a non-aspirated petrol engine so I wouldn’t really waste your money on things like performance air filters or big bore exhausts (unless you like those sort of things) as it’s not going to do much. Most mods on this particular car would be cosmetic which is not entirely a bad thing as it can be quite pretty if done up right.You can however uprate the handling since the standard Golf suspension is a bit soft for sporty driving. The 1.6 FSI uses 50mm struts so bear that in mind when choosing dampers or coilovers. Most likely you would want to do this if you plan changing on to bigger alloys wheels and trying to avoid the "tractor look".Lights are generally the easiest to mod, interior and exterior LED conversions can give it a fresher appearance. If the interior looks a bit battered you can change certain bits such as door grab handles (tip - new ones are cheaper at the dealer than eBay!) and chrome light switches.If you’re keen on audio then you probably want to change the standard headunit, look out for the MK6 Golf headunits (RCD or RNS 310/510) for an upgrade while maintaining OEM appearance. There are cheaper copies on eBay but they can vary in performance. Alternatively some decent aftermarket Double Din works a treat as well. Oh and by all means do try to avoid the base S models as that only have front speakers which is a bit of a nightmare to work on for the empty rears, go for SE spec or higher if you can.Other things you can do, well it depends how much you want to spend - frontend bumper to the GT/GTI look, OEM sideskirts, colour coded rear valance, upgraded seats etc. It's a slippery slope once you start modding!

I appreciate it. At 18 years old with 1 years NCB and a budget of £3000-£4000 I can't find another car which looks as sleek and nice as the golf in that price range, whilst it being quite quick (always a bonus, despite speed limits etc)... I don't know if you can recommend maybe any other cars or golfs which i'll be able to get insured on that looks and feels as good as the golf 1.6 fsi.(was looking at an audi A3 in the 05 plate region but went off them)Thank you though for a brilliant reponse, you've been great help.

« Reply #11 on: September 07, 2014, 04:28:38 pm » You could consider the Seat Leon (Second Gen - 2005 onwards) which shares the same underpinnings as the Golf MK5. Personally I think they look great (have a soft spot for them after having a ride in my mates K1 Cupra!) and sportier looking than the equivalent Golf. The downsides is that the interior feels a bit drab and cheap looking compared to the Golf and the sloping windscreen pillar occasionally gets in the way at junctions. But if this doesn't bother you much then they're nice cars and should be accessible for someone your age.Of course if your heart is already set on a Golf then it's not a bad choice as it's a great all rounder. A guy at my college has one, diesel injection but IDK what his insurance is like.
