Idioms are one of the wonderful “spices” that create beauty in languages ​​in general and English in particular. English idioms are very diverse, rich and contain many different meanings. In particular, idioms about love are always an attractive topic in English communication because they help create a lot of inspiration. 1. To fall in love/to fall for someone

Falling in love with someone/ to fall for someone is used to mean having strong feelings for someone or being attracted to someone. 

For example:

• I think I'm falling in love with you.
• I think I'm falling for you.

(I think I've fallen for you)

2. To be head over heels in love

If you are/ fall head over heels in love with someone, it means you are in love with all your heart, passionately.

For example:

I fell head over heels in love with  you the moment I saw you.

3. A blind date

“A blind date” refers to a romantic encounter between two people who have never met before. 

For example:

• I get very nervous when I have to go on a blind date . 
• My best friend went on a blind date nine years ago, and she and her  husband have three children now!

4. To be blinded by love/love is blind

Stemming from the fact that when in love, everyone sees everything as perfect, not seeing the other person's flaws. To be blinded by love/love is blind is an idiom that refers to blindness in   love or love blindly.

For example:

• He was so blinded by love that he couldn't see that she wasn't faithful . 
• Mary believes everything Christian says even when he lies to her. Love is  blind!

5. To be infatuated

Have you ever had the feeling of being fascinated by someone but that feeling only appeared for a short time and then disappeared? “To be infatuated” is an idiom that means to feel infatuated, crazy, but only lasts for a short time.

For example:

Anna is infatuated with her neighbor , Mark. 

6. Those three little words

When someone says to you “those three little words” , it means they are implying “I love you”. 

For some people, “I love you” is difficult to say. If you don’t feel comfortable saying “I love you,” use this expression instead! 

For example:

• He said those three little words last night. I'm so happy  !
• You know I don't want to listen to those three little words anymore . 

7. To have the hots for someone

If you “have the hots for someone” it means you find them very attractive. For example:  I have the hots for Marian .  

You can also use the word “hot” to say that someone is attractive.  Wow, Tiff is so hot  !

8. Love at first sight

“Love at first sight” is an idiom used literally. When you “fall in love at first sight” , it means you fell in love at first sight. 

For example:

• It was love at first  sight, and we've been together for 12 years already.

“Love at first sight” can also be used when talking about animals or even objects.

For example:

• When I saw the puppy, I knew it was love at first sight  .
• Mark fell in love at first sight as soon as he saw that car . 

9. To be a love rat

Not all love idioms are nice and full of positive energy.

“ To be a love rat” is a clear example. Rats are not a favorite animal of many people and when they appear in idioms, they are used to refer to a person who is flirtatious and unfaithful to their partner.

For example:

John has had affairs with several women. He 's definitely a love rat  !

10. A match made in heaven

 “A match is made in heaven” means two people are perfect, like-minded. This is the kind of relationship we want in life.

Example:  Jill and I are a match made in heaven. We couldn't be happier  !

On the contrary, “a match made in hell” refers to   a relationship that is not very good.

Example:  They've been fighting since they moved in together. They can't see that they're a match made in hell  .

11. To be an item

When two people are described as “an item” , it means they are a couple together. 

For example:  Did you know that Sam  and Jeffree are an item?

12. Puppy love

“Puppy love” usually describes a fluttering (similar to “To be infatuated” ), childish love. This idiom is most often used by adults to describe the love of children. 

For example:  What Timmy and Suzy have is  just puppy love, but they look so cute together!

13. Kiss and make up

“Kiss and make up” is an idiom that is understood figuratively to refer to making peace between couples. 

Example:  They just kissed and made up as if nothing happened . 

This phrase is also used for friends to express forgiveness:

For example:  I'm sorry. I don't want to lose my best friend. Please, let's kiss and make up.

14. To be lovey-dovey

If you're not a fan of PDA (public displays of affection), you probably won't appreciate the "to be lovey-dovey" couples who openly show off how much they love each other.

For example: They 're always lovey-dovey. I'm so jealous  !

15. To be the apple of someone's eye

“The apple of someone's eye” refers to someone who is very important to someone. This idiom can be used with someone you have a crush on or with family members (especially children) and even objects. 

For example:

• You're the apple of my eye. I love  you so much .
• It's clear that  little Brian is the apple of her eye .

16. To be smitten with someone

If you “ to be smitten with someone” , you have a strong attraction or affection for that person. 

Example:  He's smitten with his girlfriend . It's amazing. 

You can also use this idiom with animals and people.

For example:

• I'm smitten with my new puppy.
• Thomas is absolutely smitten with New York.

17. To have a crush on someone

Contrary to the literal meaning, “to have a crush on someone” does not mean to destroy or be destroyed by someone. “To have a crush on someone” : to think about someone, to have strong romantic feelings for someone you don’t know very well, or even if that person doesn’t know you. 

For example:

I have a crush on a guy I see every day on the bus, but we’ve never spoken. (Tôi thích một người mà mình thường gặp trên xe buýt mỗi ngày nhưng chúng tôi chưa từng nói chuyện với nhau)

18. To tie the knot

Khi hai người “tie the knot”, nghĩa là họ kết hôn. 

Ví dụ: Sylvia and Lukas have just tied the knot. (Sylvia và Lukas vừa mới kết hôn)

Câu thành ngữ này được sử dụng để chỉ sự sát nhập của hai hoặc nhiều công ty:

McThomas and LuggerKing have decided to tie the knot after years of competition for the market. (McThomas và LuggerKing  quyết định sát nhập hai công ty sau bao năm cạnh tranh trên thị trường)

19. To think that someone hung the moon

“Think someone has hung the moon(the stars)”: cho rằng ai đó tài giỏi, tuyệt vời, phi thường.

Ví dụ:

He adores her. He probably thinks she hung the moon! (Anh ấy ngưỡng mộ cô ta. Anh ta thường nghĩa cô ta vô cùng tài giỏi)

Bạn cũng có thể sử dụng biểu hiện này khi một đứa trẻ yêu và ngưỡng mộ người lớn.

Ví dụ:

Her little brother thinks she hung the moon and the stars. (Cậu em trai bé nhỏ luôn nghĩ chị mình thật phi thường)

20. To be over the moon

“To be over the moon”: hạnh phúc.

Ví dụ: I’m over the moon ever since I met you. (Anh vô cùng hạnh phúc vì gặp được em)

Tuy nhiên, bạn không cần phải yêu hoặc thậm chí đang nói về những cảm xúc vui sướng.

21. To fall for someone/something hook, line and sinker

“Falls for someone hook, line and sinker”: ám chỉ say mê, mê đắm và yêu một cách mù quáng. 

Ví dụ:

• I completely fell hook, line and sinker for him the moment I saw him. (Tôi đã yêu say đắm kể từ thời khắc nhìn thấy anh ấy)
• He told her the same old story and she fell hook, line and sinker for it once again. (Hết lần này đến lần khác bị anh ta lừa dối, cô ấy vẫn yêu tha thiết)

22. On the rocks

“On the rocks”: ám chỉ mối quan hệ đang trục trặc, gặp khó khăn. 

Ví dụ:

Our relationship has been on the rocks for three months already. I don’t know what to do. (Mối quan hệ của chúng tôi đang gặp trục trặc suốt 3 tháng qua. Tôi không biết phải làm gì bây giờ). 

23. To take someone’s breath away

“To take someone’s breath away” ám chỉ đang yêu ai đó, bị quyến rũ, mê hoặc.

Ví dụ:

You take my breath away every day. (Em không ngừng mê hoặc anh mỗi ngày)

Bạn có dùng thành ngữ này để chỉ sự kinh ngạc, điều diễn ra quá sức tưởng tượng đến mức phải nín thở.

His paintings always take my breath away. (Những bức tranh của anh ấy luôn làm tôi kinh ngạc)

24. To pop the question

“Pops the question” :   to propose to someone to get married, to ask someone to get married 

For example:

He was totally surprised when  she popped the question!

25. To be in a love triangle

“A love triangle” is a three-person relationship, a love triangle.

For example, person A loves person B, but person B loves person C and person C loves person A…

• I would never accept being in a love triangle. 

26. To only have eyes for someone

“To only have eyes for someone”: to only have eyes for someone, to be wholeheartedly devoted to someone

For example:

Tom only has eyes for you. You're  such a lucky girl!

28. To be the love of someone's life

“To be the love of someone's life” : to love someone wholeheartedly, with all your heart, to be the most important person in your life. 

For example:  Marissa, you're the love of my life. I love you .
